To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN W. HORNE, of Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ledgers and Similar Account-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.

The invention relates to the class of ledgers described in my patent No. 393,507,,dated No vember 27, 1888, and having a series of full or complete leaves, the facing pages of which bear the same page numbers at their corners, the interposed leaves having their corners cut away to expose the numbers on the corners of the address pages. Such a book will have many unnumbered pages and it is not an easy matter to quickly determine the location of the desired numbered page to which it is often necessary to turn in posting or entering accounts or in the ordinary use of the book in other ways. And my invention relates to the application to this class of ledgers or account books, of indicators bearing the page number of the address page, or numbered page, to which the indicator is attached. With the ordinary large ledger in which every page is numbered this manner of indicating certain of the pages would not be feasible because of the number of the pages: but with a book having the organization above mentioned it is feasible because although the book itself may have as many leaves as an ordinary ledger, only a comparatively small percentage of such leaves are numbered. I prefer to attach the indicators, not to every numbered page but to every fifth, tenth, or to the page marking a small but uniform division. I also prefer that they be arranged so that the entire number of indicatorsshall be visible upon the margin of the book by placing them in line from top to bottom so that one shall not be over another.

Referringto the drawings-Figure1 isaview of a ledger of the character specifiedin my invention attached. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion thereof to further illustrate the application of my invention. Figs. 3,4 and 5 show methods of attaching the indicators to the leaves. Fig. 6 is asection taken through the fastenings of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a section taken through Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 5.

b represents the indicators. They preferably are made of leather or similar tough flexible material, and are preferably formed from a long strip folded at the center of its length, having one edge or section 0 to extend upon the margin on one side of the leaf, and another section 0 to extend upon the opposite margin of the same leaf so that the edge of the leaf is between the two sections. These sections are then united to the leaf in any desired way. In Fig. 3 I have shown them united by capped eylets, c and collet washer, c the capped eyelets extending through holes in the section 0, and in the paper, and the collet washers forming a smooth finish upon each surface of sections, 0 c.

In Figs. 4 and 7 I have represented the indicator as secured to the margin of the leaf by a narrow fiat metal strip, 01, having prongs struck from it which extend through the sections 0 c and the paper, and are bentover a narrow metal strip d, in the nature of a small washer upon the other side of the indicator section or leaf, the said washer plate, d, having holes through which the prongs of the plate (1, pass, and the prongs being bent over upon the plate. (See Fig. 7.)

In Fig. 5 I have represented the sections,c c, as united to the margin of the leaf by fish glue or other adhesive material. In order that the indicators maybe used each leaf of the book must have a broader margin than such books usually have, and the class of ledger to which this invention is applied has a broad unused margin to which the indicators are readily applicable. The paper of which such books are made is generally very thick and strong, consequently, the indicators can be firmly secured to the leaves and can be used with very little danger of tearing the leaves.

In use, instead of guessing at the place of a given page and a consequent uncertainty and loss of time, the user of the book can immediately locate either the exact page or within a very few numbers of the exact page. Not only that but a means is provided by which the hand may be easily introduced between the leaves to take hold of them at a given place readily, and so that they may be turned quickly, the indicator acting not only to indicate the position of the leaf or page, but also to assist in the introduction of the fingers between the leaves at such place.

Each indicator bears the numbers of the indicated page to which it is attached, and as each numbered leaf of the ledger referred to herein bears the two page numbers one on each side, and as the opposing pages have the same page number the indicators would be correspondingly numbered. This numbering, however, is not essential, as the indicator may have the same page numbers on both sides.

Having thus fully described my invention,

I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States As an improved article of manufacture a ledger or similar account book having the full or complete leaves a, the facing pages of which bear the same page numbers, interposed unnumbered leaves having their corners cut away to expose the page numbers of the full leaves, and page indicators attached to the margins of certain of the full leaves having the number of the page of the leaf to which they are attached indicated upon each one respectively, and arranged to project from the edge of the book in regular order from the top to the bottom thereof, as and for the purpose described.
