Description

HGICADY. STALK GUTTER..
`(No Model.)
No. 494,248. Patented Ma,1'.28, 1893.
um www,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY G. CADY, OF PINE BLUFF,` ARKANSAS.
STALK-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,248, dated March 28, 1893. Application filed March 20, 1891. Serial No. 385,833. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY G. CADY,a citizen of the United States of Alnerica, residing at Pine Blu, in the county of Jeiterson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stalk-Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in stalk cutters. Its object is to produce a stalk cutter, the frame of which is composed of a number of detachable cutter-bars to provide for the easy substitution of` a new bar should one of the old ones become broken.
With this object in View the invention consists of a frame composed of a number of cutter-bars, cutters secured to said bars, and means for holding the bars together; it consists further in aframe composed of a number of cutter-bars, cutters secured to the bars and end plates to which each cutter-bar is secured in turn, for holding them together; furthermore it consists in a number of cutter-bars, cutters or knives secured thereto and end plates conforming to the cont-our of the frame formed by the cutter barskewach one of which bars has a beveled projecting side which serves as a seat for the cutters or knives, the bars in position, abutting against the preceding and succeeding bar; and Iinally it consists in the details of construction as will hereinafter be more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure l is a rear elevation ot my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the same.
In the drawings,A represents aframe cornposed of a number of approximately rectanguiar bars a each bar having one of its sides beveled at a2 to serve as seats for the cutters or knives as secured tothe bars by bolts a4.
B represents end plates secured by bolts orpins h to each of the cutter-bars a and conforming to the contour of the frame A, which in this case is shown 'as having live sides, although the substitution of a greater or less number of cutter-bars may be practiced, withoutdeparting from the spiritof the invention. By doing this it will necessarily alter'the general contour of the frame.
C is an axle journaled in the side plates B, centrally thereof and also `in a frame D to which a tongue and a seat F may be secured.
The interior chamber Grof the frame A may be filled with some heavy substance to force the cutter more forcibly on vthe stalks.
The operation of the machine will be readily understood. The edges of the cutters are arrangedv the same relative distances apart as the stalks to be cut and consequently when the machine is hauled over the ground they will come in contact and severthe stalks near the earth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A stalk cutter, consisting of a series of cutterbars abuttingagainst each other each bar having a beveled proj ecting side, cutters or knives secured upon the beveled sides of the cutter` bars, end plates to which the cutter-bars are secured and a frame carrying an axle journaled centrally in the end plates, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
