Description

M. POND;
' Cooking Range;
Patented Oct. 29 1846.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES POND, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COOKING-RANGE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4,830, dated October 29, 1846; Reissued August 21, 1847, No. 102.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MOSES POND, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking-Ranges, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all other things before known and of the manner of making, constructing, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the range with the front plates removed to exhibit the internal arrangement; Fig. 2, a plan, and F ig. 3, a plan with all the top plates removed.
The same letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
As the cooking ranges have heretofore been made it is impracticable to have more than two boilers or boiling chambers, one on each side of the fire chamber, two lateral flues being arranged to pass around the boilers and communicate with the oven behind and above; and it is very desirable to increase the capacity of a range by the ad dition of other boilers. I have made an improvement by which I effectually attain this important end, which improvement consists in the addition of two boiler chambers, one back of each of the side boiler chambers heretofore employed, and so separated from them by partitions and dampersas to use only one or both on each side, at pleasure.
In the accompanying drawings (a) represents the fire chambers, and (b) the oven. The two boiling chambers (0,0),one on each side of the fire chamber, are those heretofore employed, and (cl, d) are the additional boilers separated from them by the parti tion plates (6, 6) with flue holes (f, f) governed by dampers (g, 9,). The partition plates (6, e) are connected with the front plate (h) of the range by vertical plates (i, z) to complete the boiling chambers of the boilers (a, a), and these plates are also provided with flue holes governed by dampers (is, 71;), to open into the outer flues (Z, Z) formed by the masonry and a part of the curved plates (m, m) that surround the additional boilers (d, d) for the purpose of carrying the draft, when the dampers (is, 70) are opened, around the boilers (a, 0) as indicated by the black arrows, when it is desired to concentrate the heat on them; but when it is desired to give less heat to the front boilers, these dampers are closed and the dampers (g, 9) opened, the draft then passes directly from the fire chamber or grate through the holes in the partition plates (6, 6) around the back boilers to the flues (n,n) around the oven (1)), the draft being prevented from passing directly to the flues (n, n) by partition plates (0, 0). This latter direction of the draft is indicated by red arrows.
It is deemed unnecessary to describe the arrangement of the fiues and the direction of the draft around the oven as this makes no part of my improvement. The space between the lower edges of the plates forming in part the boiler chambers is walled up with masonry (p, 39,) to form the bottom of the boiling chambers and fiues. By this arrangement I am enabled greatly to increase the capacity of my cooking range, and to regulate the boiling more efficiently than by any other means known to me.
What I claim as mv invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the additional boiling chambers with the front boilefs and ele vated oven, of cooking ranges substantially as herein described, whereby I am enabled to increase the capacity of cooking ranges, as described.
2. And I also claim in combination therewith the additional side fiues and dampers by which the products of combustion can be made to circulate around the front boilers before passing to the additional boilers, substantially as herein described, thus affording the ready means of regulating the heat of the front boilers, as herein described.
MOSES POND.
