H. GOUJON.
PUZZLE DICE B0X.
No. 481,898. Patented Aug. 23, 1892.
W/T/VESSES: VVENT/i Z I By Afro/mns;
UNITED STATES HIPPOLYTE GoUJoN,
PATENT GEEICE.
OF PARIS, FRANCE.
PUZZLE DICE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,398, dated August 23, 1892,
Application tiled October 6, 1891.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIPPOLYTE GoUJoN, of Paris, France, have invented a new and Improved Puzzle Dice-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in puzzle dice-boxes; and the object of my invention is to produce a device which may be used as a dice-box, but which is constructed in such a manner that it is a puzzle to find out how to open the box, and which is also provided with certain accessories which tend to mislead and confound the would-be opener of the box.
To this end myinvention consists in a puzzle dice-box the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the box is opened. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the box, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same.
The box 10 may be Inade of any suitable material, but is preferably made of a closegrained wood, and whileit maybe made of any shape it is desirable that it be made to simulate a barrel, and when so made it is turned and provided with imitation hoops ll at each end, and it is also provided with a central circumferential groove 12, which would seem to indicate that the box was separable in the center, and a person in endeavoring to open the box will thus be misled and will try to u nscrew the ends or to otherwise separate the box in the middle. The box is also provided with a removable plugl 13 and bung 14, the plug being inserted lin a hole in the fixed end 15 of the box and the bung being inserted ina hole in the side of the box. These removable parts have no function in connection with the actual opening of the box, but as they are easily re- Serial No. 407,837. (No model.)
moved the inference is that their removal is necessary to theopening of the box, and consequently they serve to mislead a person.
The box is provided with one fixed head l5 and with a removable head or end 16, which removable portion fits snugly in the tapering end portion 17 of the box, and this tapering portion has an inner terminal shoulder 18, against which the removable head or end abuts. 'lhis' removal end or head should t so snugly that when jammed into place no crack will be observable around the edge, and consequently it will appear as if formed integrally with the remainder of the box.
'ihe box is preferably provided with dice, as best shown in Fig. 3.
To open the box, it is grasped firmly in the hand, as shown in Fig. 1, the end port-ion having the removable head is struck down violently upon a table or some solid object, and the concussion will loosen the head 16 and cause it to drop ont from the body portion of the box.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a dicebox having a tapering open endand provided with a removable head fitting in said open end and of less thickness than the taper of the said open end, as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a puzzle dice-box of a barrel shape, said box having a tapering open end with a terminal shoulder, a removable head fitting in the tapel-ing end and of less length than the taper of the said open end, a removable plug and bung, and a central circumferential groove, all substantially as described.
