BENJAMIN F. IVARREN, OF BROOKLYN, NEYV YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,910, dated December 2'7, 1892.
Application filed July 7,1892. Serial No. 439.241. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages, Cases, or Boxes for Holding Cigarettes and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple, neat and comparatively inexpensive package or case for holding matches and cigarettes or similar articles in such manner that the deleterious properties of the matches are not communicated to the cigarettes.
My invention consists in the improvements hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The nature, scope and characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof; and in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a package or case embodying features of my invention and showing a match holding strap and its complemental flap applied to the exterior of the housing of the case; and Fig. 2, is a similar View of a package or case embodying a modification of my invention in which the match holding strap and its complemental flap are applied to the exterior of the drawer of the case.
In the drawings a, is a box orhousing adapted for the reception of a sliding drawer b. This drawer b, is adapted to contain a supply of cigarettes or similar articles 0, and is provided at one extremity thereof with a rigid end piece b, and at the other extremitythereof with a movable lid or end-piece 19 that permits of.the convenient removal of the cigarettes c, or other like articles without pulling the drawer 5, completely out of the box or housing a.
Referring now to Fig. 1, the exterior of the box or housing a, is provided with a band a, pasted or otherwise secured at its respective extremities thereto and adapted to retain a supply of matches. The exterior of the box or housing a, is also provided with a lid or flap a adapted to be folded over the matches and secured in such position by inserting its free extremity in a pocket a The free end of the lid or flap a may also be secured in closed position by means of the internal revenue stamp that is commonly applied to packages containing tobacco. It maybe remarked thatthe supply of matches is held to place upon the outside of the case or package and is completely separated from the drawer b, that contains the cigarettes orsimilar articles.
Referring now to Fig. 2 for a description of a modification of my invention, one extremity of the flap a is secured to the drawer b, and the other extremity thereof is adapted for insertion between the top-plate of the box or housing a, and the cigarettes c. a, is a band having its respective extremities secured to the flap a and adapted to pass over and retain a supply of matches to place. In this construction the supply of matches is held upon the outside of the case or package and is completely separated from the drawer b, that contains the cigarettes or similar articles.
The complete separation of the supply of matches from the compartment for containing the cigarettes or other like articles is important, because it prevents the fumes, vapors and otherinjurious properties of the matches from being communicated to the cigarettes or other similar articles, and such separation is accomplished in a marked degree in each of the hereinabove described modifications or forms of case or box for cigarettes and similar articles. Moreover, abox or case embodying features of my invention may be constructed of paper, card-board or other similar material and used as a package in which the matches and cigarettes or other like articles maybe packed at the-factoryand subsequently sold to purchasers and users.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-'
1. A package or case comprising a drawer provided with end pieces and adapted to contain cigarettes and similar articles, a housing adapted for the reception of the drawer, a band for securing a supply of matches to the exterior of the case, and a fiap for covering said supply of matches, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A package or case comprising a drawer for containing cigarettes and similar articles, a housing adapted for the reception of the drawer and having a band and its complemental flap secured to the exterior thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. A package or case comprising a drawer forcontaining cigarettes and similar articles, a housing adapted for the reception of the drawer, a band for securing a supply of 10 matches to the housing, a flap for covering the supply of matches, and a pocket for the reception'of said flap, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscrib- [5 ing witnesses.
' BENJAMIN F. WARREN.
