A. D. GUNNY.
METALLIC GASING. No. 488,601.
Patented Dec. 27, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER D. CUNNY, 0E CINCINNATI, oIIIo.
lvl ETALLIC CASING".
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,601, dated December 27, 1892. Application filed May 2. 1892. Serial No. 431.530. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER D. CUNNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Casings, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My improved casin g is designed, primarily, to inclose the operatingmechanism of a cigar stamping machine of a class such as shown in my Letters Patent No. 474,163, dated May 3, 1892, but, I do not herein limit myself to such a machine, as the casing might be used to advantage in other connections.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure l, is a side elevation of my improved casing, the dotted lines indicating the hinged lids partially opened. Fig. 2, is a central longitudinal section taken through the casing shown in Fig. l.
My improved casing, as preferably constructed, consists of a bottom portion A, side portions B, hinged end portions Gand D, and the top hinged portion E. The sides are rigidly connected at their lower portion to the bottom A.' This connection may be effected in any desired manner, preferably by means of side flanges a integral with the bottom and screwed or riveted to the inner face of the sides B, as shown, at a2. To the top of each side portion are cast or otherwise suitably connected the rearwardly projecting brackets b, the latter being upwardly inclined on their top face. The lid E is pivotally connected at c to each of the sides B about on a line with the top inclined face of brackets b, said lid being adapted to rest thereon in an inclined position, as shown. To thelower rear portion of each side is pivoted the lid C, as shown at c, said lid resting against the rear inclined edges of said side portions and beneath the brackets b, as shown. This lid C is preferably cast with a central inclined chute C2 and side walls c2. The lid D is pivotally connected at d to the lower front edge portion the sides B, said lid being adapted to lie against the'front edge of said side portions in an inwardly inclined position, as shown.
B2 represents an open-ing through which one end of a cylinder shaft may project, when the casing is used in connection with a cigar stamping machine, such as illustrated in my aforesaid patent; and the purpose of the side walls c2 is to convert the lid C into a chute, through which the cigars are delivered after having been stamped.
From the construction shown, it will be seen that the casing constructed in the manner described, is open across its top between the pivotal points c and the top of lid D. The purpose of this opening is to permit of an article being placed on the inclined lid E and from thence slid or rolled into said casing through said opening. K
All the lids resting against their respective aforementioned supports in an inclined position are thus retained in position by force of gravity. The hinged lids afford and permit of access within said casinginan expeditious and economical manner.
What I claim as new and desire to secure b y Letters Patent is:-
l. The vertical side portions B having top bracketsb, in combination with the lids C, D and E pivotally connected to said side portions, the lid C having a chute C2 formed therein, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of bottom A with side portions B connected thereto, the latter having the inclined brackets b, lid E pivotally connected near the top of the sides and adapted to lie against said brackets, and lid C pivotally connected to the lower rear portion of sides B, the lid O being adapted tolie against the rear inclined edges of said sides beneath said brackets, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of bottom A, sides B connected thereto, the latter having the inclined brackets b, and the lids C, D and E pivoted respectively to said side portions at the lower, rear, and front portions thereof, and to the top thereof, the lid E resting against said brackets, the lids C and D resting against the inclined rear and front edges of said side portions, substantially as set forth.
ALEXANDER D. CUNNY. Witnesses:
