NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LOCKHART YOST, OF WYTHEVILLE, VIRGINIA.
REVOLVING CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,594, dated December 27, 1892. Application filed September 9, 1890. Renewed November 22, 1892. Serial No. 452,854- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LOOKHART YOSI, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVytheville, in the county of VVythe and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Revolving Case, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention has relation to revolving cases especially intended for the reception of books, but may be used for various other purposes, such as show cases, curiocabinets &c.
The objects of the invention are to economize to the greatest extent the space within the case thus increasing the capacity of the same and to permit of an easy access to all portions of the case, the whole being produced in a simple and economical manner.
WVith the above objects in viewthe invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure is aperspective of a case constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig.2 isa vertical longitudinal section partially broken in two. Fig. 3 is a transverse horizontal section. Fig. 4 is a side elevation on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is a plan view.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings- 1 designates the central spindle or standard cylindricalin cross section, provided at its lower end with the caster2 and its upper end with the cap 3 and immediately above the caster with the bearing boss 4.
5 designates an inner cylindrical case or receptacle which consists of upper and lower circular disks or heads 6 having central hearing openings for the reception of said spindle or standard. The heads are connected atintervals by a series of vertical connecting strips 8 which strips are connected at intervals by annular or circular shelves 9 into the peripheries of which said strips are let.
l0 designates a pair of segmental cases or receptacles which are mounted upon the spindle or standard 1 in a revoluble manner and inclose the inner cylindrical receptical 5. These segmental receptacles consist of upper and lower segmental heads 11, provided with perforated bearing plates 12 at their centers which receive the spindle above and below the head of the receptacle 5. Theheads 11 are connected by vertical strips 12* which in turn are connected by circular shelves 13.
14 designates a second pair or a pair of outersegmental receptacles, the same consisting of upper and lower segmental heads 15 terminatingattheircenters in perforated bearing plates 16 for the reception of the spindleabove and below the, heads 11 of the sections or receptacles 10. The heads 15 are connected by a series of vertical strips 17 which are connected by horizontal curved shelves 18 concentric with the bearings of the heads. The lower heads of the receptacles or sections let are provided at their ends with casters 19 to sustain their weight. One receptacle of each pair has its bearing plates off set from the heads so as to receive in a plane with said heads the bearing plates of the opposite section the plate of the opposite section not being 01f set, but flush with its section, so that the two corresponding heads 16 or 11 of their respective sections are perfectly flush with each other.
It will be obvious that Within the small space occupied by a case thus constructed a great quantity of booksor other articles may be stored. It is obvious that the outer and intermediate receptacles may be rotated to bring any point of either of them opposite a person or may be separated to give access to the'inner cylinder or case, which may also be revolved to present different points.
It will be observed that each set of shelves tions being of such combined circumference so as to be less than that of a circle of corresponding diameter, therefore by the term segmental-sections as herein-before and hereinafter employed I mean sections of a combined circumference less than that of a circle of equal diameter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a case of the class described, the combination with a central pivot or standard, of a central case revolubly mounted thereon, and a series of independent segmental cases inclosing the central case and also revolubly mounted upon the pivot or standard, substantially as specified.
2. In a case of the class described, the combination with a central pivot or standard, of an inner cylindrical casing journaled upon the pivot or spindle, and a series of independent segmental cases, arranged in pairs, inclosing each other and the inner case, journaled on the pivot or standard, substantially as specified.
3. In a case of the class described, the combination with a central spindle or standard, terminating atits lower end in a caster, of a series of graduated independent sections inclosing each other, of segmental shape and journaled upon the spindle, the bottoms of the sections being also provided with casters, substantially as specified.
4. In acase of the class described, the combination With a central pivot or standard, of a series of independent segmental sections journaled upon the spindle and graduatedin size to receive and inclose each other, substantially as specified.
5. In a case of the class described, the combination With a central pivot or spindle, an inner cylindrical receptacle consisting of opposite heads journaled upon the pivot or spindle, a series of vertical strips connecting the heads and shelves connecting the strips, a series of outer independent segmental sections graduated as to size so as to inclose each other, each consisting of opposite segmental heads terminating in bearing plates for the reception of the pivot or spindle, the plates of one section of each pair being off set to receive those'of the opposite section the heads of the sections being connected by vertical strips and curved shelves connecting the strips, substantially as specified.
6. In a case of the class described, the combination with a central pivot or standard, of a'central case revolubly mounted thereon, and a series of segmental eases inclosing the central case and also revolubly mounted upon the pivot or standard, each of said segmental sections moving independently of each other and of the central section, and the outer sections having independent casters, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM LOOKHART YOST. Witnesses:
