CARPET-SWEEPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,562, dated December 27, 1892.

To aZZ whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, MARTHA B. HOLDEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Removing Lint, &c., from Carpets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of referenc marked thereon.

The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective device which is especially adapted for use in renovating and cleaning carpets, floors, walls and the like, by removing therefrom the dust, lint, and other small particles of dirt that are diflicult of removal with the broom or brush, and the invention consists in a device of the character above described constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described in detail and subsequently claimed.

In the accompanying drawings A represents a carpet-sweeper of any of the usual forms and is provided with a handle B for operating it, and as any carpet-sweeper may be used in connection with my invention, description in detail of its construction is considered unnecessary.

My improved device consists of a roller C of wood, metal or other preferred material, the same being provided with a covering D of any material that will readily absorb a liquid, such as any textile or fibrous material; woolen or other cloth or sponge being considered most desirable. When used in connection with a carpet-sweeper, the roller maybe connected thereto so that it will follow immediately after the sweeper to take up the lint, dust, or any other fine particles of dirt passed Serial No. 443,164. a permanent fixture to the sweeper or may be used independent of the sweeper as found most preferable. In the present instance I have shown the roller provided with wire arms E, the inwardly bent ends thereof forming a journal at each end of the roller upon which the latter turns, and when the roller is to be used independent of the carpet-sweeper, the arms are formed of a continuous piece of wire as shown in Fig. 5 and means for attaching thereto a suitable handle.

It is desirable that the covering D should be removable from the roller 0 in order to clean it after being used also to be dipped in water or other liquid to properly moisten it previous to its being passed over the carpet, floor, wall, ceiling, or other place where it is to be used. In order to render the covering detachable I provide the same with suitable fastenings that will securely hold the covering in place over the periphery of the roller. The fasteners employed consist of hooks a secured along one of the edges of the covering which engage with holes I) in the opposite edge thereof, the edge having the holes being provided with a suitable binding 6 of any desirable material so as to prevent the tearing out of the holes. A thin metal strip would be found most excellent as a binding to protect the holes from tearing and if preferred such material may be used. It is further desirable that the covering D should he held stationary upon the roller so that it will move with it and not slip thereon. To secure this object I provide the periphery of the roller with holes (Z extending on a line longitudinally therewith and in number to correspond with the number of hooks used, and after the hooks have been engaged with the holes in the opposite edge of the covering the ends of the hooks are also engaged with the holes in the roller as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The holes (1 as will be seen extend at an angle so as to more securely retain the hooks in engagement therewith.

Having now fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-

A device for removing dust and lint from carpets, floors, and other places, consisting of a roller having holes extending longitudinally along its periphery, in combination with a covering of absorbent material provided upon its respective edges With hooks and holes and connected together and to the roller, substanro tially as and for the purpose set forth.
