GEORGE WARREN HOLDEN, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,575, dated April 26, 1892.
Application filed May 6, 1891. Serial No. 391,732 (No model.)
To all whom it nwty concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WARREN HoL- DEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Book- Oovers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and g ures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in book-covers, the features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of -Iny invention is the adaptation of a paper cover to books varying somewhat in size by using a blank of one piece of paper provided with a false back attached to the inner surface thereof near the center.
I accomplish the object bythe construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which there is but one View, and that a plan.
The illustration represents the cover as it will generally be prepared for the trade.
A is a paper blank comprising two unequal halves transversely, the right being slightly longer than the left, but somewhat similarin general contour.
D D are the top end flaps, E E the lower end flaps, and O C the side flaps.
B is an oblong square piece of paper, a part being broken away, and is pasted to the blank a little to the left of the center. The top end is free and has a series of lines S across its face to indicate the points of folding the same in turning the end down to adapt the same to different lengths of books. The end flaps only are gummed, as indicated by dotted lines at 1 and 2. The lower end of the blank is notched only to the depth of the flaps. The upper notch 3 is deep, and the portion of a book extending beyond the bottom of said notch is covered by the false back. The flap E is pasted to the side flap C.
To place the cover on a book, turn the free end of the false back down to correspond to the length of the book, place the left lid in the angle of the cover, close the book and get the point at which the right flap must be turned down, break the paper and turn the flap down against the inside of the lid, then moisten and close down the lower flap to the right and the two flaps at the top and the covering is perfected. The dotted lines F show the position of a book when inclosed; but this position will be somewhat changed as the sizes vary.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a book-cover, the blank A, provided with the notch 3 at the top, the top end flaps D D, bottom end flaps E E, and side flaps C O, in combination with the false back 15, secured to the inner surface of said blank and provided with a free end to cover said notch and to adapt the same to books of varying lengths, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE IVARREN HOLDEN.
