UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS N.- LUSK, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
DETACHABLE BAIL AND EAR THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,130, dated April 5, 1892. Application filed December 28, 1891. Serial No, 416.294. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS N. LUsK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Bails and Ears Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in certain improvements on Patent No. 443,100, granted to me December 23, 1890, for a detachable bail and ear therefor, and has for its objects the strengthening of the ear at certain points and the engagement of the bail at the center of the ear, in addition to the peculiar shape, all of which will be fully described and claimed below.
In the patent above referred to a construction is described and claimed in which the ear is provided with a central hole having a passage-way leading from said central hole to the outer edge of the ear for the purpose of attaching and detaching the bail, thereby weakening the ear; also, the central hole in said ear is of such a size and the bail so constructed and attached that it has no bearing or contact with said hole, the bearing or contact of the bail with the ear when in use being on the T-head of the bail, engaging the internal periphery of the chambered-out portion on the back of said car, which construction allows the pail or other article to tip to either side when being carried by the bail, according as the T-head engages the internal peripheryof the chambered-out portion to either side of the vertical center; also, the shape of the ear necessitates their being made in pairs, all of which are objectionable features.
My improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bail-ear with a broken end of a bail attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a reversed elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3 in-Fig. 1, looking from a point at the right. Fig. 4 isa diagonal section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1, looking from a point above and at right angles to said line.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A represents one end of the bail attached to the ear, the other end being of a similar construction, is broken away.
B is a circular bail-ear having a chambered-out portion D on the back side; also, an annular flange cl, by which it may be secured t0 the pail or other article.
0 is a passage-way leading from the outer periphery of the annular wall of the chambered-out portion obliquely to a vertical angle and terminating semicircularlyv at the center of the ear, and is provided with the stop-spring e, which retains the bail in the end of the slot, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At the end of passage-way O, which terminates at the outer periphery of the annular wall of the chambered-out portion is an opening E, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, a portion of said wall being cut away between the annular rim cl and the inner face of the top wall of said chambered-out portion for the purpose of admitting the head F of bail A. By this construction it will be apparent that said ear is strengthened at the outer terminus of said passage way by means of the annular rim cl. The ends of the bail A, which are attached to the ears B, are .turned at right angles through and have a bearing with the semicircular terminus of the passage-way C, terminating with the T -head F, forming a hook, as shown in Fig. 3.
To attach the bail to the ears, the angled ends terminating with the T-heads are passed into and through the opening E on into the passage-way O to its semicircular terminus, the stop-spring e yielding laterally to admit of such attachment.
WVith the ear constructed in accordance with the drawings shown it is clearly apparent that one pattern isapplicable to either side of the pail or other article to which it may be attached, thus the necessity of constructing them in pairs is avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the ears having the annular flanges or rims, the chambered portions, the openings in the annular walls of said chambered portions in connection with the passage-ways terminating semicircularly at the cent-er of the car through which the ends of the bail pass in attaching and detach- In testimony of the foregoing I have herelng, stop-springs in said passage-ways, and a unto subscribed my name in presence of two bail having the angled ends terminating in witnesses.
the heads in such a manner as to form hooks, LEWIS N. LUSK. 5 said angled ends having a bearing in the Witnesses:
semicircular terminus of the passage-Ways in VVALTER S. W001),
said ears, substantially as set forth. DORE E. 00D.
