NITED STATES ATEN EFICE.
HENRY A. FROST, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
PU LLEY-CLOTHES-LINE TIGHTENER AND FASTENER- SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,251, dated March 22, 1892.
Application filed January 15, 1891. $erial No. 377,925. (ModeL) To all whom, it may concern".-
Be it known that I, HENRY A. FROST, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Pulley-Olothes-Line Tighteners and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pulley clothes line tighteners and fasteners, whereby aline may be drawn taut and fastened; and for this purpose it consists of a pulley, over which the line is passed and Which is mounted in a suitable housing, the latter being provided with wings, around which the rope may be wound, and being also provided with a spring-clip thereon to prevent the unwinding of the line, and in the combination, construction, and arrangement of the several parts of which it is composed, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by similar numerals, Figure 1 is a side view of my device applied to a clothes-line. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device by itself, and Fig. 3 is a detail of the spring-clip for the line.
The pulley l is contained in a housing 2,.
formed in a single piece of sheet metal, which is bent in its central part-and folded back upon itself, thus closing one (the rear) end of the housing, while the free ends of the sheet metal are bent outwardly and rearwardly, as at 3, forming wings upon the sides of the housing and at the forward end thereof, around which the line may be Wound. In the rear of these wings spring-wires 4, serving as additional points around which the line may be wound, project from the housing and are centrally bent in toward the sides thereof, their ends flaring outward, thus facilitating the insertion of the line therein.
The spring-clip is constructed as follows: A U-shaped piece 5, formed of a single piece of wire, projects from the closed rear end of the housing and has its open end secured thereto. A bridge 6, having perforated ends,
through which the parallel pieces of the U- shaped piece pass, slides thereon and is normally held against the outer end of the U- shaped piece by the helical spring '7 contained bet-Ween the bridge and the closed end of the housing. Such being the construction of my invention, it is evident that one end 8 of a rope may be secured to the outer end of the U-shaped piece and that the end 9 of another rope or the opposite end of the same rope may be passed over the pulley 1, and having been drawn sufficiently to make the rope or ropes taut on their supports the last-named end may be wound around the wings 3 and wires 4 in any desired manner, so as to prevent the loosening of the line, after which the loose end, such as 9 of the last-named rope 9 may be passed between the outer end of the U- shaped piece 5 and the bridge 6, where it will be held by the bridge 6 and spring 7, thus preventing the unwinding of the end 9 from around, the wings 3 and wires 4.
Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim is- 1. The combination, with a housing having wings thereon, of a pulley pivoted therein and a spring-clip mounted upon the said housing, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a housing having wings thereon and with a pulley pivoted within the said housing, of a U-shaped wire frame secured to the said housing, a bridge sliding upon the said frame, and a spring forcing the said bridge toward the outer end of the said frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a housingformed of a single piece of sheet metal bent back upon itself and having its ends formed into wings at the open end thereof and with a pulley pivoted within the said housing, of a U- shaped frame secured tothe closed end of the said housing, a bridge sliding on the parallel members of the said frame, and a spring tending to .force the said bridge away from the housing and toward the outer end of the U- shaped frame, substantially as described.
HENRY FROST.
