Description

(No Model.) I
T. WESTERMAN. APPLE CUTTER AND-QUEER.
No. 471,158. Patented Mar. 22, 1392.
kd' d T /A Tl m: I I I WITNESSEW NVENTOR flh/i/M %m4 ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
THEODORE WESTERMAN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
APPLE CUTTER AND CORER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,158, dated March 22, 1892. Application filed October 9, 1891. Serial No, 408,230. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE WESTER- h IAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newark, county of Essex, State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apple Cutters and Oorers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and reliable apple cutter and corer cheap in construction and durable and easily operated.
The invention consists in the improved apple cutter and corer and the arrangement and combination of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved apple cutter and corer. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 0:, Fig. 1.
In said drawings, (1 represents a bed-plate, to which are secured or made integral therewith upright standards I) b, with top crossbar a, secured to said .standards by screws or in any desired manner. To the bed-plate a is also secured a plate or rest d, made of wood -or any suitable material, having in its center a pointed pin (1''. Through an enlargement c in the center of cross-bar 0 passes an up right rod 6, provided on its upper end with a knob or handle f and having its lower end secured to the head-bar h of yoke h. The side pieces of said yoke are grooved, as shown in Fig. 2, and-are adapted to slide up and down on the standards I) b. To the lower part of the yoke his secured a knife-frame or ring i, provided with two or more radial knives 7c 70, Fig. 2, and with a central circucutting mechanism in its normal position, as
shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of the machine is as follows: An apple A is placed on the plate at and held in position by pin cl. The handle f is then pressed down, thus forcing the knives through the apple. The central circular knife Z cuts out the core and the radial knives divide the apple into sections, according to the number of knives. As soon as the handle is released, the cutting mechanism is returned by the action of the spring g to its normal position. The cutters or knives can also be arranged parallel to each other, or in any desired manner.
This machine can also be used for cutting pears, potatoes, or other similar fruit or vegetables.
I do not intend to limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, as various changes can be made without changing the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved apple cutter and corer herein described and shown, consisting of a baseplate a, a table or cutting-block d, secured on the base-plate,a pin d extending through and projecting above said table, a vertical frame rising from the base-plate and provided with a central enlargement c at its upper end, a Vertically-moving yoke it, provided with grooves in its outer sides engaging the sides of the vertical frame, a ring 2', secured to the lower end of said yoke, radial and circular knives arranged within and projecting 2 muse below the said ring, a vertical rod mounted In testimony that I claim the foregoing I in the enlargement c and having its lower have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of 00- end secured to the yoke, and a spring coiled l toher, 1891.
around the said rod and having its opposite THEODORE \VESTERMAN. 5 ends secured, respectively, to the yoke and tfitnesees:
the upper end of the vertical frame, suhstan- ABRAHAM llLlANNERS,
tially as specified. WM. D. BELL.
