TOE-WEIGHT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,831, dated August 2, 1892. Application filed October 20, 1891- Serial No. 409.310. (N0 inodel.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. MOMIL- LAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Cloud, in the county of Webster and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful TOe-WVeight, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to toe-weights; and the objects in view are to provide a cheap and convenient weight and means for attaching the same removably and adjustably t0 the hoofs of horses.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a toe-weight constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being in position. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective in de tail of the device. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a trans verse section.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

The standard 1, employed to secure the weight to the hoof, has its inner face slightly concaved, as shown, to conform to the exterior of the hoof and its lower end rearwardly bent and disposed at an angle to the standard to form a lug 2, which fits in a recess formed in the bottom of the hoof between the hoof and shoe. The opposite vertical edges of the standard are beveled or dovetailed, and said standard is provided at its center with a longitudinal slot 3, also beveled. At its upper end and at intervals throughout the length of the slot countersunk recesses 4 are formed therein, while at the lower end of the slot an enlarged opening 5 is provided.

6 designates the usual pear-shaped toeweight, and the same is provided upon its rear face with a dovetailed recess 7, adapted to fit removably and slidingly upon the standard 1. A perforation 8 is formed in the weight, the rear end of which is countersunk 0r flared, and a bolt 9 passes through the opening and is provided at its outer end, which is threaded, with a removable nut 10 and at its rear end with a head, which may be drawn into the countersunk or flared end of the perforation 8 and be flush with the bottom of the recess 7. To apply the weight, the bolt is drawn outwardly, so that the head rests in the countersunk or rear end of the bolt-receiving opening formed in the weight, and is therefore flush with the bottom of the recess 7 of the weight. The lower end of the weight is then introduced over the upper end of the standard and moved downwardly thereon until the head of the bolt is opposite the lower hole 5 of the standard, when the bolt is pushed back or to the rear until the head passes beyond the opening 5 and is in line with the beveled slot 3, after which the weight is raised until it reaches a point desired upon the standard, when the nut is run down upon the bolt, whose head is thus drawn into one of the countersunk recesses 4 of the slot and the application is complete. By reversing this operation the weight may be removed from the standard, and in this manner various weights maybe employed, all of which are adj ustable up and down upon the standard and when in position are secured against any possibility of jarring 01f.

The standardl is preferably provided at opposite sides of its slot with screw-openings 11, (in this instance four in number,) through which screws may be passed into the hard horn or crust of the hoof.

Having described my invention, what I claim is The combination, with the standard 1, havin g opposite dovetailed edges, a lower bent end 2, and a longitudinal slot 3, having beveled edges, said slot being provided at its lower end with an enlarged opening 5 and at intervals above the same with countersunk recesses i, of the weight 6, the rear face of which is provided with the dovetailed recess 7, mounted for sliding upon the standard, the bolt provided with a head at its inner end, passed through a perforation flared at its rear end and formed in the weight and through the slotted standard, the head of the bolt being adapted to .be withdrawn through the hole 5 of the standard, and the nut upon the outer end of the bolt, substantially as specifled.
