DE HAVEN LANCE.
PAVING BRICK. No. 478,612. Patented July 12, 1892.
FIG/.1.
fi b
wlfirows I Evan/$0 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DE HAVEN LANCE, OF NEYV CUMBERLAND, WEST VIRGINIA.
PAVING-BRICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,612, dated July 12, 1892. Application filed April 5, 1892. Serial No. 427,787. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, DE HAVEN LANCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Cumberland, Hancock county, West Virginia, have invented certain Improvements in Paving-Bricks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a paving block or brick as to provide for the proper introduction of the cementing material between adjoining bricks, and also for such a disposal of said cementing material as to effect the practical encircling of each brick thereby, so as to insure the formation of proper water-proof joints between the bricks. This object I attain by constructing the brick in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a paving brick constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the other side of the brick.
The brick is rectangularin form, and upon one of the vertical sides or faces of the brick are formed one or more ribs or projections a, two being shown in the present instance, these ribs extending from top to bottom of the brick and serving by contact with the flat side of an adjoining brick to insure the desired separation of the bricks for the introduction of the cement or water-proof filling usually employed in laying this class of pavements.
In the opposite vertical face of the brick about midway of the height of the same is formed a longitudinal groove or channel (1, ex-
tending from end to endof thebrickand com municating with like transverse grooves or channels b, extending across each end of the brick, so that when the bricks are laid the cementing material will gain access to these grooves or channels, and will thus form a band extending around three sides of the brick and forming with the filling on the fourth side a complete inclosing band, so as to pro vide a water-proof stop or filling for preventing the access of surface water to the foundation upon which the brick is laid.
I- am aware that prior to my invention vertical ribs have been formed upon the sides of paving-bricks for the purpose of separating the same, and also that recesses have been formed in the ends of thebricks, and I do not therefore claim either of these features, separately considered; but
I claim as myinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The Within-described paving-brick, having upon one of its vertical sides a rib or ribs extending from top to bottom of the brick and in its other vertical sidea longitudinal groove or channel extending from end to end of the brick and communicating with transverse grooves or channels formed in the opposite ends of the brick, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DE HAVEN LANCE.
