UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
JAMES o. LOUGHRY, or GREENSBQURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOW-OAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,619, dated July 12, 1892.
Application filed September 24, 1891. Serial No. 406,642. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. LOUGHRY, of Greensburg, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Show-Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in show-cases, and especially to that variety of show-cases which are adapted to exhibit cigars advantageously and permit them to be easily reached. It is necessary at the present time to sell cigars out of the original package, and a vender cannot take them from the box and hand them to a customer, but must permit a customer to select them from the box. It will be seen, then, that it is very inconvenient to hand out a great many boxes, so as to permit the customer to make his selection; and the object of this invention is to produce a show-case which will exhibit the cigars advantageously and which may be opened from the rear by the vender, so that the, customer may reach into the show-case and help himself to the cigars of his choice.
To this end my invention consistsin a showcase the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the showcase. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a broken plan view showing the branch liftingchains and the manner in which they are guided over the top of the show-case, and Fig. 4 is a broken vertical plan on the line 4 4 in Fig. 2.
The case is provided with an inclined partition 11, which extends longitudinally through it and which is inclined from the top back portion to the frontlower portion of the case, and this partition is provided with a se ries of steps or supports 12, which are adapted to hold the cigar-boxes and which have projecting flanges 13 at their lower sides to prevent the displacement of the cigar-boxes.
The case is provided with a glass front 14,
which is adapted to be raised, so that the interior of the case may be reached, and the glass is properly bound at the bottom and is held to slide in the slideways 15 at the sides of the case, which slideways extend to a point above the top of the case so that the glass may be guided and not easily broken. The glass is raised by chains 16, which extend over suitable guide-pulleys 17 at the front upper corners of the case, and which extend downward through a suitable channel in the corner portions of the case and connect with clips 18, which are secured to the bottom of the glass. These branch hoisting-chains 16 extend rearward over the case-top and converge at the rear of the case, where they pass over guide- pulleys 19 and 20, which are held in a suitable bracket 21, and the branch chains here merge into a single chain 22, which hangs down on the back side of the case and terminatesin a weight 28, which serves as a counter-balance for the glass 14, so that the glass may be easily operated and held at any desired height.
To shield the glass when it is raised and also ornamentthe case,a suitable ornamental front 24 is secured to the upper top portion of the case, and this front may be provided with a mirror or may be ornamented in any attractive or desired manner.
The cigar-boxes are placed upon the supports 12 in the case, and when a customer wants cigars the vender pulls downward on the chain 22, thus raising the glass 14:, and the customer may then make his selection.
From the foregoing description it will seen that the cigars may be displayed to great advantage and that the case may be very easily opened and closed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent- 1. A show-case having a vertically-sliding glazed front, ways or guides therefor, guidepulleys 17 at the front edge of the top of the case, pulleys 19 19 and 20 at the rear edge of the case-top, cords or chains extending from the lower part of the sliding front upward and rearward over pulleys 17, thence rearwardly across the top of the case between pulleys 19, and there merged into a single cord or chain extending downward over pulley 2O behind the case for operation by the salesman and provided with a weight, substantially as salesman, and shield or mirror in front of the set forth; upper projecting ends ofi the ways 15 to con 10 2. A show-ease having: a vertically-sliding ceal the same, substantially as set forth. glazed front, ways or guides 15 therefor pro- JAMES C. LOUGHRY' 5 jecting above the top of the case, operating chains or cords connected to said front and Witnesses: extended over guide-pulleys to the rear of the B. F. VOGLE, case and there weighted for operation by the T. R. WINSHEIMER.
