UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL J. KELSO, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
sue-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,942, dated J' une 28, 1892.
Application filed November 10, 1891. Serial No. 411,459 (No model.)
' troit, in the county of Wayne and State of line :c in Fig.1.
'Michigam have invented a new and Improved Slip-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in av device adapted to hold salesmens entry-slips and similar articles; and the object of my invention is to produce a holder which may be conveniently carried about, which will hold a quantity of entry-slips, bills, or any other analogous articles, so that they will not be scattered about, and which will also hold them in a manner to be easily written upon either when the holder is heldin the hand or laid upon a support.
To this end my invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formivnga part ot' thisspecitication, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a plan View of the holder embodying my invention with entry-slips in place therein. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the Fig. 3 is a plan view of the case and tablet when removed from the holder proper, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the entire device.
The device is provided with a rectangular case 10, which is open on the top side and which is recessed at one end, as shown at l1, which recess is for the purpose of enabling the entry-slips or other articles to be conveniently pulled from ott the tablet 12, which tab let tits loosely in the case 10 and is provided with posts 13, which extend downward to the bottom of the case 10 and which serve as guides for the tablet, and which also enable it to be rigidly supported when the device is placed upon a support, so as to stand upon the posts. The tablet 12 is also provided with side pins 15, which extend outward through slots 16 in the sides of the case 10,`and which also project through similar slots 17 in the sides of the holder proper which carries the case, and which will be described below. The tablet l2 is pressed to the upper portion of the case 10 by a curved fiat spring 1S, which is centrally secured to the under side of the tablet, as shown at 19 in Figs.,2 and 4, and the free ends of which rest upon the floor of the case 10; but it will be understood that any other spring may be substituted for this spring with like ette'ct. The case 10 is held in a holder 20, which holder is also of a rectangular shape and corresponds in length to the length of the case 10, and the holder is open at each end, so that the case may be conveniently slipped into it or removed from it. The holder 2O is provided on opposite sides and at top and bottomv with iianges 2l, which are thus adapted to overlap the top and bottom portions of the case 10 and which form a slideway into which the case may be pushed. The holder 2O has also at the top and at one end a top plate 22, in which are openings 23, the object of which is to enable the numbers or other marks upon an entry-slip or similar article to be observed. The top flanges 2l of the holder 2O are also connected by a crosslar articles are carried upon the tablet 12, and
the pressure of the spring 1S forces the tablet upward and presses the slips against the crosspiece 24 and top plate 22, and it will be seen that the cross-piece and top plate, in connection with the tablet, also serve the purpose of a clamp, which enables the slips to be held firmly in place.
The operation is as follows: A quantity of the slips 26 are placed upon the tablet 1 2 and the tablet is pushed downward into the case 10 and the case thrust into the holder 20. The slips 26 will thus be in position for use, and the salesman or other person using them may hold the device in his hand while he writes the name of the transactionupon Athe slip and within the slot 25 and fills vin any other necessary matter upon the lower portion of the slip. The slip may then be Withdrawn by pressing downward upon the tablet, and this operation is facilitated by means of the pine 15, as the operator may with his fingers push downward upon the pins. The pins 15 are not absolutely necessary, although they fa- IOO firmly in place, and consequently the slips cannot be scattered about.
Having thus fully described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A slip-holder comprising an open-top case adapted to receive the slips and having a spring-pressed follower to press the slips outward, and a holder into which the case is passed and provided with flanges overlapping the longitudinal edges of the sides of the said case, substantially as set forth.
2. A slipholder comprising a case having slots in its sides and open at its top and a spring-pressed follower or tablet in the case and having pins projecting through the said Slots, substantially as set forth.
3. A device of thecharactendescribedom-' prising an open-topped case, a spring-pressedb tablet mounted in the case and having guideposts extending through the case-bottom,and a holder for the case, said holder having crossstrips extending across the case-top, substantially as described.
4. A device of the character described, comprising an open-topped case having one end cut away or recessed, a spring-pressed tablet mounted in the case, and a holder for the case, said holder having cross -strips extending across the case-top, substantially as described.
5. A device of the character described, coinprising an open-topped case, a spring-pressed tablet mounted in the case and having posts extending through the case-bottom, a holder for the case, having` cross strips extending across the case-top, and pins secured to the sides of the case and extending outward through slots in the case and holder, substantially as described.
6. A device of the character described, coinprising an open-topped case,a spring-pressed tablet mounted therein, and a holder for the case, said holder having side flanges to einbrace the top and bottom of the case and having cross-strips extending across the case, one of said cross-strips having openings therein, substantially as described.
