FASTENER FOR THE MEETING RAILS OF SASHES.

DAVID GUTERMUTE, OF PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA.
FASTEN ER FOR THE M EETlNG-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,537, dated June 21, 1892. Application filed November 13, 1891. Serial Ito/11,800. (No model.)
T0 in whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID GUTERMUTE, of Petaluma, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window or Sash Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and highly useful improvement in window or sash fasteners; and it has for its object the production of a cheap, simple, and highly-efficient improved lock or fastener, whereby either one or both sashes of a window can be adjusted and held locked in any desired position.
The invention comprises the detail construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly. pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of a portion of a window with my improved fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view showing all the parts of the locking mechanism separated.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the upper sash of a window, and A the lower sash thereof. To one of the side bars of the upper sash A is rigidlysecured a plate at, having a series of openings a therein. To the upper horizontal bar of the lower sash is attached the locking mechanism B. The same comprises a movable bolt 0, the inner end of which is designed to enter any one of the series of openings at in plate a. This bolt is inclosed in a casing 79, attached to the lower frame by screws passed through holes Z) in its bottom plate, and it is also provided with a removable top plate b which has a flange b designed to project into an aperture in a curved or bulged portion of easing b. In one side of bolt C are grooves or recesses forming shoulders (1 cl, with which are designed to engage the inner ends of a pivoted catch or locking-head D. This catch D is pivoted by a hollow boss d projecting from the bottom of easing Z), and is held thereon by the top plate 12 the latter being secured by a screw d working in said boss. The narrowed portion of catch or locking-head D is projected out through the opening or aperture in the curved or bulged portion of casing 11. A
plate-spring E, secured at its lower end to the lower sash, engages bolt 0 and normally holds the latter in engagement with the openings in plate a.
In practice when it is desired to raise the lower sash or lower theupper sash, or both, the operator grasps the milled head of bolt 0 and draws outwardly thereon, and after adjusting the sash or sashes releases his hold 7 on the bolt, and the latter, under the action of the plate-spring, is forced inward, causing its inner end to enter any one of the openings in plate a, thus lockingv the two sashes together, the bolt being firmly held in such position by the pivoted catch or locking-head D, engaging the outer shoulder on the bolt. In this way the sashes will be firmly locked in relation to each other. A room can be safely ventilated by lowering the upper sash and locking the same in place. hen it is desired to move the sash or sashesindependent of the locking mechanism, the bolt is drawn outward and the catch or locking-head is turned so as to engage the inner shoulder on said bolt, and thus hold the latter retracted. A sash or window fastener thus constructed is extremely simple, inexpensive, and durable, and is not liable to readily get out of order or become deranged. i
Another and important advantage is that myimproved fastener can be readilyand easily applied to any and all kinds of windows now in use.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with a window-sash having a plate secured to one side thereof provided with a series of openings, of a lock comprising a bolt having shoulders in one side, a spring engaging said bolt, a casing having an apertured, curved, or bulged portion in one side, a hollow boss projecting up in said casing, a top plate, a screw for holding the same working in said boss, and the catch or looking-head pivoted by'said boss and havinga narrowed portion projecting through the said apertured, curved, or bulged portion, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
DAVID GUTERMUTE. Witnesses:
H. S. GUTERMU'JJE,
FRANK K. LIPPIIH.
