Description

(N0 Model F. W. DEGHAUX LEVEL AND PLUMB.
No. 477,405. I Patented June 21} 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK WV. DEOHAUX, OF DEFIANOE, OHIO.
LEVEL AND PLUMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,405, dated June 21, 1892. Application filed March 17, 1892. Serial No. 425.333. (N model.)
v citizen of the United States, residing atDefiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Level and Plumb, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This improvement is designed to provide a combined level and plumb that will be not only convenient in use, but cheaply made; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described, and then definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improvement in use as a level. Fig. 2 shows the same arranged as a plumb. Fig. 3 is part of the frame of the level detached and folded. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of a pair of standards.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letters,A represents the leveling-staff and plumb-rule; B B, two legs hingedtogether at b and provided with tenons b at the bottom, which are set into mortises a in the leveling-staff and are fastened there by setscrews D.
At O Care shown standards, which are mortised into the leveling-staff and fastened by set-screws D. Near the bottom of the standards are two wires 6 e, which are fast in said standards O, and above them are two other wires 6' 6 the former being fast in the standard, like the lower wires; but the wire 6 is loosely fastened to one of the standards by a staple f at one end, while the other end is held by a hook g, which will swing aside and allow of the wire 9 being swung aside to allow the bob K to be set in position for use. These wires are all curved, as shown, and are designed to keep the bob from swinging too much when in use. The bob K is suspended by a cord at, hung from a screw h, set into a plate m, attached to one of the legs B.
tached to the plumb-rule; but instead of the u staple and hook shown in Fig. 1 one end of the loose wire is pivoted in a plate 19, set in one side of the aperture for the bob, while the other end slips into a slot cut in the opposite plate 19. At the bottom of the plumb-ruleis shown a plate E, marked to show the center.
By the arrangement of the bob in guides it is prevented from swinging about so much and it is sooner brought to a state of rest, while the use of the movable guide permits of the ready insertion of said bob.
WVhat I claim as new is- 1. A combined level and plumb comprising a rule or staff A, a plumb-bob K, and cord at, the three devices being constructed to be used as a plumb, in combination with the attachable legs B, whereby the whole may be used as a level, substantially as described.
2. In a combined level and plumb, the rule or staff A, having standards 0 O, carrying wires 9 e, the legs B, the bob K, and cord n, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a plumb-bob and means for hanging the same with guides on opposite sides of and contiguous to the bob, one of which is movable to allow of the ready removal of said bob, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of March, 1892.
- FRANK W. DEOHAUX.
