PICTURE-FRAME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,188, dated June 14, 1892.

Be it known that I, OnviLLn C. R. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frames, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and -iu which- Figure l shows my improved picture-frame in front View, with the mechanism behind it indicated in broken outline. Fig. 2 shows the same as seen on its rear side7 with the parts behind the outer cover shown in broken outline. Fig. 3 shows my said picture-frame in transverse longitudinal section taken near the outer edge of the nearest elastic strap.

The object of my invention is to improve, simplify, and cheapen the construction of picture-frames, more particularly such as are used for cabinet-photographs and like sizes, and which are provided with a brace to stand like an easel. To attain said desirable ends, I construct my said new and improved picture frame in substantially the following manner, namely: I take card-board, veneering, or other suitable material, which I cut to the required form and size and provide it with the desired sight, thus forming the front of my device-the frame a, having the opening Z). Said frame may be made by gluing together two or more thicknesses of said material upon each other to give the whole suiiicient stiffness and rigidity, especially when veneering is used, and in that case the grains of the layers of wood should cross each other. Behind the sight Z) I put a back c, which, like the frame, may be composed of superimposed sheets of material glued together. Said back overlaps on the frame beyond the sight far enough, at least, to conceal all objects that might be seen through the sight o. Over and behind said back are placed springs (l, preferably straps of elastic webbin g, of which the ends thereof are secured to the back of the frame. Said straps are secured so as to draw or press said back against the frame a with sufficient force to hold the picture placed between the frame and back, where by means of said yielding pressure it may be accurately adjusted to the desired position in the sight of the frame. Over said back and strips is then secured a neat covering e of material which has some elasticity, as Celluloid or paper of like nature, which is fastened to the frame near its outer edges, and between said fastening and edges of the back said covering is raised into transverse ridges e. The object of said ridges is to obtain the necessary yielding mot-ion for the back when pictures of different thicknesses are to be placed into the frame. This back thus supplies the necessary yielding motion and at the same time the required'rigidity to permit the use of a brace f, hinged to the back with a hinge g, so as to form an easel-frame which will stand securely and sustain considerable pressure.

Vhat I claim isl. The combination, with a picture-frame, of a back overlapping the sight and secured to the frame by elastic straps on said back secured to the frame, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with a picture-frame, of a back overlapping the sight and secured tothe frame by elastic straps on said back secured to the frame, and a yielding cover over said back, and straps secured to said frame, substantially as specified.

3. The combination, with a picture-frame, of a back overlapping the sight and secured to the frame by elastic straps on said back, and a yielding cover over said back, and straps secured to said frame and provided with a brace, substantially as specified.

4. The combination, with a picture-frame, of a back overlapping the sight and secured to the frame by elastic straps on said back, and a yielding cover provided with transverse ridges c and brace f, substantially as specified.
