HOOPER B. STRAUT, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO JENNIE T. VOU'GHT, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 47 5,356, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed December 29, 1891. Serial No. 416,480. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-IooPER B. STRAUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Springs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to door-springs, and has for its object certain improvements in that class of door attachments whereby they are greatly simplified, the tension of the spring rendered adjustable, and the door itself automatically closed and retained against accidental opening, as will hereinafter be described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specificatioinFigure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention applied to portion of a door and door-frame; Fig. 2, a side view of metallic brackets constituting part of the invention; and Fig. 3, a plan view of same, with pins and roller in place.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A represents a troughshaped braoket, which is secured to the door, said bracket having upper and lower flanges or sides a, with inclined racks or recesses b for the reception of a pin 0. The sides of the bracket a, in addition to the racks b, are provided at its end nearest the hinge of the door with apertures in which is secured a pin havin g a roller B mounted thereon. The bracket is also provided with apertures or screw-holes d for attaching the fixture to the door.
0 designates a bracket having upper and lower outwardly-projecting ears 6 e, which are apertured or provided with perforations f, through which passes a pin g. This bracket is also provided with apertures through which pass screws h.
D designates an elastic band, which is secured to the bracket 0 by means of the pin 0, so as to be located between the outwardlyprojecting ears e c. This band is also retained in connection with the bracket A by means of the pin 0, which is passed through the band, the ends of the pin engaging with the racks b b 011 a vertical line with each other. As a plurality of racks are provided, the pin is placed in the rack, which will give the desired degree of tension to the band. This elastic band, when the door is opened, will contact with the roller B, so as to obviate a sharp bend in the same, which would be liable to fracture said band. WVhen the door is swung fully open, the elastic band will be stretched to its fullest extent and will hold the door in an open position, and when the door is not fully opened the band will act as a spring to close the same.
The device hereinbefore describedis cheap and simple, and can be attached without having to employ skilled labor, and when the band after use becomes stretched it can be readily adjusted.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide a door-spring made up of a rubber tube, which has been attached to the door and door-frame by suitable fixtures, and I do not claim such as my invention; but
'What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a door-closer, the combination of abracket 0, having a pin 9 removably attached thereto, a bracket A, adapted to carry a pin 0, a roller B, also carried by said bracket, and an endless elastic band I), the parts being organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HOOPER B. STRAUT.
