To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that l, ELIZABETH F. JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Dewees, in the county of Clay and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Fastener, of which the following is a specication.

The invention relates to improvements in covers for barrels.

/The object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable cover for barrels adapted to preserve the contents of barrels after the latter are opened in the same condition in which they Were before the barrels are opened, thereby enabling the contents of a barrel to be maintained for an unlimited time free from moisture and unexposed to the action of air.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel provided with a cover constructed in accordance with this invention. designates a barrel having a cover composed of sections 2 and 3, hinged together and secured to a contractile hoop 4 by a anged plate 5, which is composed of a segmental portion secured to the section 3 of the cover, and a depending curved flange extending from the curved edge or periphery of the segmental section and secured to the inner face of an end 6 of the hoop 4E andprojecting therefrom and adapted to lap over the end 7 of the hoop to effect an air-tight joint at the lapping ends of the hoop. A spiral spring 8 has one end secured to the end 6 of the hoop and is connected by a link 9 with a lever 10, which is fulcrumed on the end 7 of the hoop and is adapted to draw the ends of the hoop together to clamp the cover securely on a barrel, and the spiral spring permits suiiicient adjustment to adapt the cover to different sizes of barrels. The lever l0 is fulcrumed on the hoop by means of an eye or staple 11, and it is curved throughout its length to conform to the hoop and to lit snugly against the same. The end 6 of hoop has secured to its outer face a curved plate 12, Which projects over the end 7 of the hoop and forms a bearing-surface for the spiral spring 8, and it also forms with the flange of the plate 5 a recess or groove to receive the end 7 of the hoop.

In order to effect an air and water tight joint, the inner face of the hoop is provided with a rubber lining 13, the meeting edges of the sections of the cover are lined with rubber, the lower face of the section 2 of the cover is provided at its curved edge with a rubber packing 14, and the hoop is provided at its upper edge with a projecting rubber packing-ring 15. The lower face of the section 3 of the cover is also provided with a strip of rubber to prevent the passage of air and moisture between the cover and the hoop at the back of the barrel.

It will be seen that the cover is adapted to be readily clamped on barrels of different sizes, that the contents of barrels are not exposed to the action of air and moisture and their aroma is preserved, and that the contents of the barrel after the latter is opened may be preserved in the same condition in which it was before the barrel was opened.

The cover is especially adapted for use in stores and other places where a barrel is opened and its contents dispensed from time to time, and it is secured when closed by a spring-catch 17.

The combination, with a barrelcover,of a contractile hoop secured to the same, a spiral spring attached vto one end of the hoop, and a lever fulcrumed on the other end of the hoop and connected with the spiral spring and adapted to draw the end of the hoop together, whereby the cover is clamped on a barrel, substantially as described.
