UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
ALFRED JEFFERY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PENCIL-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,971, dated October 13, 1891.
Serial No. 384,830. (No model.)
T0, @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED JEFFERY, of the cit-y of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and'useful Improvement in Pencil-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention has relation to pencil-holders or pencilcases; and it consists in a case or holder for a removable lead, having a channel provided for the said lead, and a removable adjustable end piece, and packing or cushion of rubber or othersuitable material for biliding upon and securing the lead in position in the case when compressed, as hereinafter more particularly described. Y l The object of my inventon is to provide a pencil-case for adjustable lead, which will iirmly secure the lead in any desired position in a manner which will prevent the lead from the liability of breaking off by reason of the nipping device provided in the case for securing the lead in position, as in numerous devices heretofore invented, and to produce a device which shall .at the same time more securely and satisfactorily hold the lead in any desired position in the case.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout.
Figure lis alongitudinal sectional view of myimproved pencil-case. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the point or end securing device, in detail, coupled to the barrel or case. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the portion of the point, showing the rubber paekingor cushion compressed and binding upon the lead. Fig. 4 is a crosssectional view on the line x of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view on the line g/ y of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view on the line .es of Fig 2. Fig. 7 shows the packing or cushion detached from the point or tip of the case.
A represents the barrel or case of the pencil, which is provided centrally with a longitudinal tubular sheath l), which holds and protects the lead 1'. A plug c is fitted within the barrel A at or near the lower end and firmly attached thereto7 the plug c having provided upon its lower projecting end the screw-thread, to which the hollow tip or point d, also provided with a corresponding screwthread cut on its interior atthe base, is screwed and adjusted, the base of the tip or point d being preferably of a diameter externally about equal to the internal diameter of the barrel A, so as to pass freely into the latter. The sheath h is provided, preferably, with a collar or expansion of material e outside of the plug '6, so as to form a shoulder e with the plug c. A collar k is also provided on the outer end of the sheath of a diameter about equal to that of the interior diameter of the tip or point cl at that point, the said sheath b extending, preferably, within the tip or point d, leaving only sufficient space between the end of the tip d and the shoulder k to provide for the packing or cushion j", of rubber or other suitable elastic material. The packing or cushionfis of a diameter about equal to the diameter of the end of the tip CZ, and is provided with a cylindrical hole through its central portion slightly larger than the diameter of the lead t', through which the said lead t' passes. The diameter of the orifice 0, provided in the end of the tip (Z, is also preferably slightly larger than the diameter of the lead z'. The interior diameter of the sheath l) is also slightly larger than the diameter of the lead. The sheath b should lit neatly in the orifice provided for its passage in the plug e and in line with the axis of the case, and the surface between the sheath b and the plug cmaking a smooth joint, allowing ofthe sheath b to rotate within `the plug c with the tip (I and the lead c' when the packing f is compressed against the shoulder 71'..
In inserting the lead for use the point d is partially unscrewed, so as to release the compression of the packing or cushion f' and to allow the lead /L' to be inserted in the sheath l), leaving a sufficient point of the lead proj ecting. As the point or tip d is then screwed up on the plug c, the packing or cushioufis necessarily compressed between the point of the tip d and the shoulder 7.3, provided on the end of the sheath b,'which binds necessarily upon the lead t' and holds it securely in position. The collare, forming the shoulder c', prevents the sheath b, when the compression occurs, from being forced up into the case, though free to rotate with the tip, packing or cushion,
TOO
and lead. If the sheath is not free to rotate with the lead and packing, a twisting and displacement of the packing might occur and tend to strain or break the lead. The sheath b might be retained in its position and prevented from being forced in by other construction-such, for instance, as extending the sheath to the extreme upper end of the case A-and yet be free to rotate, though the construction I have described is a preferable one.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pencil-case, a main barrel and adjustable point or tip adjustably secured to said barrel provided therein, a longitudinal sheath having a channel for the reception of the lead, said sheath adj usted rotatively Within said barrel and extended into said removable adjustable tip, an elastic packing or cushion provided in said tip between the end of the saine and the end of said sheath, and an orifice provided in said packing for the passage of the lead, said packing adapted to be compressed upon the lead by adjustlnent of the removable tip upon the barrel, substantially as described.
2. A pencil-case, having a barrel A, removable adjustable tip d, longitudinal sheath b, provided with collars e and 7c, plug` c, secured in said barrel, and packing f, substantially as described.
3. In a pencil-case, abarrel A, longitudinal sheath b, having collars e and k, said sheath adapted to rotate in said barrel, plug c, and adjustable tip d, packing f, provided in said tip, and lead i, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of March, A. D. 1891.
ALFRED JEFFERY.
