FINGER GUARD.
No. 460,104. Patented Sept. 29, 1891..
LUO/ Ihventor: w QwM/UM 1n! nunms venue 00., vuuvommm, msumsreu, a. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BARRETT, on CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FINGER-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,104, dated September 29, 1891.
Application filed April 24, 1891.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BARRETT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Finger-Guards, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the same forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a fingerguard composed of an adhesive fibrous material, a membrane of animal texture, and a fastening device to be used on the forefinger for rapidly counting sheets of paper, bank-bills, checks, &c., without wetting the finger; and it consists in the construction of the article for the purpose above stated.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an inside front View of the article as composed. Fig. 2 represents an outside front view of the same. Fig. 3 shows a top view, on an enlarged scale, in section on line 0c 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail of a part of the fastening device, and Fig. 5 illustrates the article as used in full view.
The article composed consists of a strip of common rubber cloth A, in size and shape to fit tightly around the forefinger-joint, as shown in Fig. 5 of the accompanying drawings, and the taper ends of the strip, mounted with a metallic locking device, are brought close together for fastening. To carry out in this position the effect of its use, the rough surface 7' of the rubber cloth has to be on the outside, on account of its adhesive qualification when affected from the natural Warmth of the limb in contact, for readily seizing and turning over the corners of a series of paper sheets or bills, &c., in the act of counting the same, while the smooth inside surface s of the said strip next to the finger-joint is provided with a fitting-piece of fine leather 0, which is cemented to the middle portion Z of the rubber strip to prevent the same sticking to the Serial No. 390,351. (No model.)
skin of the limb. The locking device for fastening the above said strip securely to the finger-joint consists of two separate metal plates f f, the same being bent lengthwise in the middle to be readily attached to the extreme end on each side of the rubber strip. One of the plates f bears a piece of stiff Wire cl, a portion of which is doubled up at suitable points and formed into hooks d d, which penetrate the metal plate through corresponding openings 6 e for interlocking with the openings to a on the other plate f of the locking device, which is provided only with a straight piece of wire I) for stiffening or bracing the plate and keeping the said hooks (Z (Z in secured position when locked.
To secure a firm connection of the plates of the locking device with the ends of the rubber strip, said plates are folded over the wires cl and I), slipped over the ends of the rubber strip, and secured thereto by tightly bending and pinching the same thereon, forming thereby the furrows h it near the inclosed wires.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a finger-guard for counting sheets of pa- ,per, the combination, with a strip of adhesive fibrous material and a membrane of animal texture, of perforated metallic plates secured to the ends of said strip, wires cl Z), secured in the folds of the plates, the wire d in one plate being provided With hooks cl 01, adapted to engage the wire I) through the perforation in the other plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM BARRETT.
