No. 469',810. Patented Mar. 1. 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT R. ZELL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE CAMPBELL 'du ZELLA COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
`WATER-TUBE BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,810, dated March 1, 1892.
Application filed November 19, 1891. Serial No. 412,365. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: on horizontal wrought-iron beams E', the Be it known that I, ROBERT R. ZELL, of drum A by a rest F and rollers h h, and the Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have indrum O on the saddle I. The drum B is supvented a new and useful Improvement in ported on the saddle H, resting upon suitable 55 5 Water-Tube Boilers, of which the following, brick-work in the bottom of the furnace.
taken in connection with the accompanying The furnace is of the ordinary construction drawings, is a specification'. and is Vprovided with a grate c, resting upon This invention has for its object to produce suitable supports c2 in the front furnace-wall an improved water-tube boiler which is sim- A', and a bridge-wall b. c represents the 6o 1o plein construction, efficient in operation, and the opening through which the fuel is introone in which the circulation is continuous7 duced to the grate c. Deflectors a. a of firethereby avoiding the burning out of the parts brick are arran'ged above the upper series of due to the deposit of sediment on the inside tubes d and g and serve to deflect the proof the parts exposed to the directaction of the lducts of combustion around and through the 65 I5 products of combustion, and, further, a boiler tubes, compelling the products of combustion having a large heating-surface, whereby the to take a circuitous route, thereby exposing a circulation is increased and the steam rapidly large surface to said products of combustion,
generated. by means of which the water is rapidly heat- My invention consists of certain novel feaed, a perfect circulation is produced, and 7o 2o tures of construction, combination of parts, steam is rapidly generated.
and arrangement of co-operating parts, all The boiler, as above described, can be made as hereinafter described, and particularly set entirely of steel, and will have a very small forth in the claims. number of openings and joints, and is Well In the accompanying drawings, which illusadapted for high pressures. The tubes d and 7 5 25 trate my invention, Figure l is a side elevag can be tapped or otherwise secured to the tion ofthe boiler with the side furnace-wall respective water-drums A, B, and C. omitted, so as to show the arrangement of the K K represent doors, by means of which connections of the various parts of the boiler. access is had to the interior of the furnace, for Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the boiler. the purpose of cleaning out or for repairs. 8o 3o Referringto theviews of the drawings, itwill By means of the rollers h 7L, having suitbe seen that within the furnace-walls A there able supports, the expansion and contraction is arranged a water tubular boiler consisting of the various parts of the boiler is provided of three cylindrical water-drums A, B, and O, for without breakage or loosening of any of arranged sidewise tothe furnace. The drum the parts, as the rollers permit alongitudinal 8 5 35 B is connected to the drum A by means of the movement forward or backward, due either t-o curved inclined tubes d, and the drum A is expansion or contraction. connected with the drum C by means of the The water-drums A, B, and C and the steam curved inclined tubes g. The tubes CZ and g and water drum D are provided with the are arranged in rows across the furnace and usual hand-holes and hand-hole covers L. 9o 4o in each row are parallel to each other, and in The boiler is provided with the usual lire-box each row are located above the spaces between and ash-pit doors and the usual gage-cocks, the tubes in the row beneath, as shown in Fig. equalizing-pipes, and safety-valves. 2, thereby forming a staggered arrangement The operation of the boiler is as follows: of the tubes, by means of which a large heat- The feed-water is introduced into the drum 95 45 ing-surface is exposed to the re, which is C by means of the pipe M, provided with a broken up by the staggered arrangement of valve m', and being heavier than the heated the tubes. From the said drum O several water in' the boiler descends through 'the tubes pipes .I extend downward to the drum B. The J into the lower cylindrical boiler-drum B, steam-drum D is connected to the drum A which acts as a water-leg and mud-drum or roe 5o and the drum C by the pipes F and E, re.- separator. The tubes CZ enter the sides ofthe spectively. The drums Aand Care supported said water-drums radially or at a line drawn through their centers. The circulation of the water will be across the drum B, as shown by the arrows, and upward through theinclined tubesd into the water-drum A, and from said water drum the water can return either through the inclined tube g to the drum C to mix with the incoming feed-water, or may ascend through the pipes F into the steam and water drum D, the water in the said steamwater drum descending by means of the pipes E, where it mixes with the feed-water introduced into the drum C by the pipe M, provided with the valve m', and the circulation of the water continues in this manneraround and through the various drums and tubes.
'The sediment in the water is deposited in the bottom of the drum B, from which it may be blown o through the pipe L, having the valve Z, as shown in Fig. 2, or cleaned out from time to time. 'lhe facilities for cleaning the boiler are excellent, as by the construction above described the deposit takes place in the drum B, from which it can be easily cleaned out. The construction of the boiler also admits of many boilers being set up in a continuous battery, as they can be cleaned from the ends and top instead of the sides, as with the other water-tube boilers now in use..
By closing the valve m in the pipeM and opening the valves m in the pipe M and valve Z in the pipe L the boiler may be blown od.
I do not intend to limit myself to the exact construction sho'wn, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus ascertained the nature and set forth the construction of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
