LOUIS SCHUTTE, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
INJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,698, dated February 9, 1892.
Application filed December 10, 1891. Serial No. 414,605. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, LOUIS SCHUTTE, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Injectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention refers to mechanism for operating and means for adjusting the steamvalve in what are known as double-tube injectors, in which the water is delivered by one set of tubes or nozzles generally known as lifting-tubes tinto another set generally known as forcing-tubes, through which water is forced into the boiler. The quantity of water discharged by the injector is controlled by the lifting-tubes, and Abetween certain limits' they can be proportioned to deliver a greater orless amount of water byincreasing or reducing the area of opening of the steamnozzle'ot the lifting-tubes.
rIhe object of the invention is to provide means of changing the area of this steamnozzle at will without in any way interfering with the operating mechanism for starting and stopping the injector. 4
In order to secure variation of the opening of the steam-nozzle, I attach to its valve a cone entering the nozzle, so that by varying the stroke of the valve the cone is withdrawn more or less from the nozzle and the latter accordingly given more or less active area.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of an ordinary double-tube injector having my improvement embodied therein, one end being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
In' the accompanying drawings, A represents the steam-nozzle through which the actuating steln-jet is delivered, and B is the reciprocating valve controlling the ad mission of the steam and operated by one end of a lever C, connected through sliding spindle D with an operating-lever E, these parts being arranged in the usual manner, so that as the lever Eis moved the steam-valve B is opened and closed.
In applying my present improvement I provide the spindle of the steam-valve at its rear end with a plug F, screwed therein and adapted to slide upon and be turned by the square end of a rotary spindle G, which is extended through a stuffing-box to the exterior and there provided with a handle H, by which it may be turned. By turning this handle, and thus screwing the plug in or out, the latter may be caused ro regulate the stroke of the steam-valve, while the movement of the main operating-lever E and its connected parts remain unchanged. I also provide the main steam-valve B with a cone b, projecting forward into the steam pipe or nozzle A. The effect of limiting the movement of the valve B is to cause the projection of this cone a greater or less distance into the steam pipe or nozzle A, so that the area for the passage ot steam through the nozzle A around the cone will be greater or less, according to the adjustments of the screw-plug F. As the plug which serves as a stop for the opening valve is screwed outward or backward the opening movement is diminished and the volume of the steam-jet reduced. It will be observed that the foregoing adjustment is effected without interfering with the ordinary action of the operating parts and without changing the action of the apparatus in any other respect.
For locking the plug in its adjusted position I allow the handle H a slight vibration on the spindle G and connect to it alockingspindle h, surrounded by a spring h', which causes it to engage with a notched collar 72,2. Any other suitable locking device may be employed.
The essence of the invention lies in combining with the steam-controlling valve a cone to enter the nozzle and means for increasing or diminishing' the length of the movement of the valve. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- I. In a double-tube injector, and in combination with the steam-nozzle of the liftingtube, the controlling-valve provided with a cone or spindle projecting into the steamnozzle, means for openingand closing said valve, and an adjustable device to limit the opening action, whereby the maximum area of the steam-passage may be varied and fixed at will without affecting the remainder of the apparatus.
2. In a double-tube injector, and in combination with the steam-nozzle of the lifting- IOO tube, the valve having a cone to enter the nozzle, means for opening andV closing the. valve, and an adjustable stop device to limit the distance through which the valve moves.
3. In a double-tube injector, and in combination'with the steam-nozzle of the liftingtube, an operating-valve having a conical projection to enter the nozzle, means for moving thevalve, and an adjustable stop-screw applied to the valve, substantially as shown.
4. In a double-tube injector, and in combination with the steam-nozzle of the liftingtube, a valve provided with a cone to enter the nozzle, an operating-lever C, the intermediate adjustable screw-plug F, and means for Operating said plug from the outside of the apparatus.
5. In combination with the steam-controlling valve, an injector, means for moving the same, the screw-plug, the spindle to adjust the plug from the exterior, its operating-handle H, and locking devices for said handle.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand, this 4th day of December, 1891, in the presence of two attesting Witnesses.
LOUIS SCHUTTE.
