Be it known that I, FRED E. \VARING, of Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cover for Tables and Stands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in swinging covers for tables, stands, and similar articles; and the object of my invention is to produce a simple and convenient cover which may be made to disappear through a slot in the table or stand and which is adapted to cover a phonograph or other article.

To this end my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a broken sectional end view of the cover and table, showing the peculiar construction of the cover end and the manner in which the cover is hinged to the table; and Fig. 2 is a broken detail sectional view showing the means of hinging the cover and of securing the cleats to the table.

A is an ordinary table; but the cover may be applied to any sort of a table or stand,

and in the top of the table is a longitudinal slot at, having branch slots a extending i11- ward from each end, and the slots a and a afford space for the cover B to swing.

The cover B is of a semi-cylindrical shape and has semicircular ends B, which are cut away from the rear edge toward the center, as shown at h, the cut-away portion terminating at the center in a'shoulder b. It will be noticed that the ends are cut away more at the center than toward the edge, and it is es sential that they be cut away as described, as otherwise the cover cannot swing entirely beneath the table.

as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and. the v cutaway portion 1) will fit over that portion of the table next the inner ends of the slots a, so that the cover may be turned entirely beneath the table and out of the way.

To cover the cut-away portions of the ends B of the cover, the table and cover are provided with movable cleats D, which are widest at their inner ends and are perforated at their rear ends, as shown at (I, so that they may be pivoted to the tabletop, and the inner ends of the cleats are connected with the central portions of the ends B of the cover by the curved links d. .It will thus be seen that when the cover is swung beneath the table in the manner described the links (1' will cause the cleats D to move downward, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the top edges of the cleats will thus be flush with the upper surface of the table; and when the cover is closed the movement will be reversed and the links will cause the cleats to be raised above the surface of the table, so as to cover the cut-away portions of the cover ends.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the slotted support and the cover adapted to swing through the slots, said cover having its ends cut away, as described, of cleats pivoted at their outer ends to the support and pivotally connected at their inner ends with the ends of the cover, substantially as described.
