UNITED STATES SARAH REBECCA ERCIDEVEAUX,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR SHARPENING SCISSORS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,354, dated December 1, 1891.
i Application filed September 30, 1891. Serial No. 407,353. (No model.) i
.T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH REBECCA FROI- DEVEAUX, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Sharpening Scissors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in thel art to which it appertains to make and use the sam e,referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for sharpening cutlery, especially scissors.
The object of the invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and effective device by means of which scissors can be readily and properly sharpened; and it consists of a base having a dovetailed recess with inclined sides beyond the same, said dovetaiied recess being adapted to retain a le constructed for the' specific purpose of sharpening scissors, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Fig-ure l is a perspective View of a device for sharpening scissors constructed in accordancewith my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view.
A refers to a base of any suitable configuration, but made preferably of hard metal. Centrally this base is provided with a dovetailed recess a, beyond which the walls ar oppositely inclined, as shown at a.
B refers to the file, the lower portion of which is shaped to fit snugly and be retained within the dovetailed recess a, and beyond the dovetailed portion of this file the sides thereof are flared outwardly and provided with teeth or cutting-surface for filing or sharpening the cutting-edges of the scissors.
In sharpening a pair of scissors the flat portion of one of the blades thereof is placed against the upper flat surface of the baseplate and the cuttinge'dge reciprocated against the file, theinclination of the surface of which with respect to the base-plate being -such that the proper bevel will be given to said cutting-edge. It will be observed that the filings will collect in the space formed between the inclined wall a and the file, and by providing this space a Wire-edge may be removed from the blade by placing the cutting-edge thereof into said recess and reciprocating the fiat portion against the tile.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device for sharpening scissors, the combination of the base A, a ile secured thereto and provided with a cutting face or faces at an acute angle with the top of the base, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SARAH REBECCA FROIDEVEAUX.
