To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. THOMP- SON and THOMAS THOMPSON, of Townsend, in the county of Meagher, State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Billiard-Cues, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v

Our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents an exterior longitudinal view of a billiard cue in part, with tip in position, embodying our invention; and Fig. 2, a similar view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal view of the forward portion of the one in detail, with the adjustable ferrule and outer sleeve removed; Fig. 4, a transverse section upon the line a r in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a transverse section upon the line 5 5 in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is alongitudinal view of the tip of the cue detached.

A is the cue-stick, which is fitted at its forward end with a fast metal band or ferrule B of reduced exterior diameter at its outer-or upper portion, leaving a shoulder b below or on its back part, also formed with an exterior longitudinal groove 0 in its outer or upper part, terminating below in an annular groove 0. These grooves c c constitute part of a bayonet-fastening for a pin or stud (l of an outer sleeve 0 to engage with. The forward portion of the cue-stick also se ves to receive back or down within it the shank of a fast bar D, arranged to project beyond the front end of the stick, and of enlarged angular construction in transverse section at its outer or front part, which part is in sliding fit with the interior of aferrule E, of like angular construction, to secure the bar and ferrule turning together. The exterior of this ferrule E has a screw-thread 6 upon it, which fits a corresponding screw-thread f on the interior of an outer sleeve 0, which is free to engage by its pin (1 with the grooves c c in the band B. This sleeve O extends some distance in front of the threaded ferrule E, and is of slightly greater interior diameter beyond its screwthread f to permit of the screw-threaded ferrule working freely within the sleeve beyond the threaded portion of the sleeve and to form a pocket for the adjustable cue-tip.

G is the tip, made of hard or well-pressed leather and of elongated or rod-like construction. This tip, which may be hammered down on its outer end, as wear requires, to form a button-like head on it beyond the outer end of the sleeve 0, fits closely but adjustably within that portion of said sleeve which projects in front beyond the screw-ferrule E, on the outer end of which latter the tip rests.

\Vhen the one is set up for use, its tip G is entered down within the outer extended portion of the sleeve O, with its head end protruding somewhat beyond said sleeve and with its inner or lower end free to rest on the top of the screw-ferrule E. with the screw-ferrule E, is then turned or adjusted to bring the stud (Z in the sleeve in line with the longitudinal groove 0 of the band 13 and the same slid down or back over the rod D and band B till the pin or stud (Z comes in line with the annular groove 0', when by suitably turning the sleeve 0 or onestick, with its attached band B, the sleeve 0 will be locked with the band B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. \Vhenit is required to adjust the tip G outward to give it the necessary projection and to feed it forward as its outer projecting end becomes worn by use, it is only requisite to rotate by hand the cue-stick in a given direction or sleeve 0 in an opposite direction, which will cause the screw-ferrule E to be forced outward, and with it the tip G, resting on or against it, which action may be repeated from time to time till the whole or nearly the whole of the tip is used up, thus largely extending the durability of the tip and rendering its renewal only necessary at very distant intervals.

Having thus described our invention,what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A billiard-cue having an externallythreaded sliding sleeve 011 its forward extremity, an outer sleeve inclosing said sliding sleeve and rotating on the forward end of the cue in rear thereof, the interior of the rotary sleeve being threaded and engaging the threads of the sliding sleeve, and an adj ustable tip in the forward end of the rotary The sleeve 0,

sleeve, whereby when either the one or rotary sleeve is rotated in the proper direction the sliding sleeve will bear on the inner end of the tip and force it outward, substantially as set forth.

2. A billiard-cue comprising a stick provided at its forward extremity with an angular extension, a longitudinal groove 0, and an annular groove 0, communicating therewith, a rotary removable sleeve having a pin engaging said annular groove, a sliding sleeve on said angular extension, said sleeves having engaging screw-threads, and an adjustable tip in the outer end of the rotary sleeve and resting at its inner end on the forward end of the sliding sleeve, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the cue-stick A,

of the sleeve O, fitted 'to engage with and to turn upon or around the outer end of said stick and extending beyond it, also provided with an interior intermediate screw-thread f, the externally-screW-threaded ferrule E, engaging with the screw-threaded portion of the sleeve 0, the angular rod D, attached to the cue-stick and in engagement with the ferrule E, with freedom for the latter to slide longitudinally upon said rod, and the cue-tip G, essentially as and for the purposes herein set forth. a
