J. T. LIVINGSTON. VEHICLE REACH COUPLING.
No. 450,295. Patented Apr. 14,1891.
NITED TATES ATEN -FFICE JOSEPH T. LIVINGSTON, OF KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA.
VEHICLE REACH-COUPLING;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,295, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed January 1'7, 1891. Serial No. 378,123. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. LIVINGSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kissimmee, in the county of Osceola and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Coupling-Pole, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in running-gear for vehicles.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the means for coupling the reach to the axles and bolsters and dispense with the hounds usually employed for that purpose.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a running-gear embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates an axle, which is secured to the axle-bed 2, and is connected with the bolster 3 by a king-bolts in the usual manner. The king-bolt pivots a reach-coupling 5, which is constructed of a single piece of metal and doubled on itself to form an approximately oval portion 6, which passes around the bolster, axle, and axle-bed transversely of the same, and is secured to the upper face of the bolster and the lower face of the axle by the king-bolt 4. The reach-coupling extends rearward from the axle and bolster with converging sides, and has its ends 7 arranged parallel with each other and separated sufficiently to receive the reach 8. The extreme ends of the reaoh-coupling are split and are divergently curved and provided with perforations to receive bolts 9, on which are arranged spacing-sleeves 10. The inner end of the parallel portion 11 is provided with perforations to receive a bolt 12, on which is arranged a spacing-sleeve 13 to maintain the parallel portion 11 at a proper distance to receive the reach which is secured in place by a removable pin 14. The pin 14 passes through perforations in the parallel portion 11 and an opening in the reach and is prevented being accidentally displaced by a key 15. The reach is readily detached from the coupling by removing the pin 14.
It will be seen that the coupling is simple and inexpensive in construction and is adapted readily to receive and release the reach.
The bolster is provided with a recess 16, which brings the outer face of the reachcoupling within the bolster, which is preferably provided With a metal bar 17 secured to the bolster by bolting or the like.
Having described my invention, What I claim is t 1. The combination, with a running-gear, of the reach-coupling constructed of metal and being doubled to form an elliptical portion 6 and the parallel portion 11, the elliptical portion transversely encircling the axle and bolster and pivotally secured to them by the king-bolt and the parallel portion forming a socket, said reach-coupling having its ends split and diverging, the bolts securing the parallel portions, the spacingsleeves arranged on the bolts and separating the parallel portions, the reach arranged in the socket, and the pin securing the reach therein, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a running-gear, of the reach-coupling constructed of metal and being doubled to form an elliptical portion 6 and the parallel portion 11, the elliptical portion transversely encircling the axle and bolster and pivotally secured to them by the king-bolt and the parallel portion forming a socket, and the reach arranged in the socket, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH T. LIVINGSTON.
Witnesses:
