CLOTHES-DRIER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,829, dated September 1, 1891.

Application filed October 30, 1890. Serial No.369,807. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELIAS S. FASSETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Mississippi and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in OlOthesDriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to clothes racks or driers, and has for its object to produce a simple, cheap, and portable clothes-drier and one that can be packed in a small space for shipping, &c.; and with these ends in view Inyinvention consists in the parts and combination of parts as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front perspective View of the drier with one series of arms in position to hold the clothes and the other series of arms in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a band or support to which the arms are pivoted.

A represents the back of the drier, which may be made of any suitable material. The back is secured firmly to the wall of a room or other suitable place, so that there can be no lateral movement.

Secured near the top and bottom of the back A are suitable shelves B and B, which may, if desirable, be faced with metal.

I) and b are hooks which are pivotally secured on the edge or face of the shelves B and B.

O is a support which is secured to the under side of the shelves and is bent upon itself at c, and this bent portion is turned at right angles to itself and formed into a loop or eye 0'. The ends 0 and c of this support are also bent at right angles.

D are arms or hangers, which are each provided with staples or eye-screws d.

To secure the dilferent parts hereinbefore mentioned together I proceed as follows: The shelves B and B are suitably secured to the back A. The arms D are strung on the support 0. r The support 0 is then secured to the shelves by means of the sharpened ends 0 and c and by means of a screw, which is passed through loop 0 and screwed into the shelf. The hooks are then secured to the shelves and the eye screws or staples to the arms D. The device is now ready for use. It is obvious that to bring the arms into a working position all that is necessary is to raise the arm and pass the hook into the eye on the arms. When not in use, the arms can hang down out of the way.

By the construction hereinbefore described clothes can be hung entirely on one side of the drier, if desirable, without any danger of the drier tilting to one side and dropping the clothes on the floor or ground. i

As shown in the drawings, my drier is provided with sixteen arms-eight arms on each shelf. These sixteen arms have a holding capacity equal to sixty-four feet in length. If desirable, twenty arms may be used, which would have a holding capacity equal to eighty feet in length. It will thus be seen that I provide a very desirable, novel, and efficient clot-hes-drier.

It is evident that many slight changes and alterations may be made in the relative construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention; and hence I would have it understood that I do not confine myself strictly to the parts herein described.

WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In aclothes-drier, the combination of aback board A, a shelf B, a support 0, said support consisting of a bent wire, the ends of which are attached to the rear under side of the shelf and which at the middle is bent upon itself, and an eye formed at right angles to the bent portion, said eyebeing attached to the front under side of the shelf, and the drier-arms D, pivotally attached to the support 0, and capable of being held in a horizontal position by means of the eyes 61 on the arms and the hooks b on the shelf, substantially as shown and described.
