SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,506, dated August 25, 1891.

Be it known that 1, JAMES SKUcE, of Truesdell, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Im- 5 proved Cigar or Pipe Holder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings hereto annexed, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the internal parts, and Fig. 3 is a tranverse section taken on line 00 w in Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- The obj ect of my invention is to provide a cigar and pipe holder having a sufficientlylong smoke-passage to insure the cooling of the smoke before it reaches the mouth of the smoker; also, to provide means for arresting and condensing the nicotine and other volatile matters escaping from the burning tobacco before they can reach the mouth of the smoker.

The invention consists in the'peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as herein after fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Two tube-sections A B are bent at right angles and connected with the same side of the tube 0, the longer arms of the tube-sections A B being parallel with the tube 0 and oppositely arranged with respect to each other with their open ends projecting beyond the ends of the tube 0. The tube-section A is provided with a conical cigar-holder D. The tube-section B is provided with a mouth-piece E of the ordinary form. The tube 0 may be permanently closed at one end and is provided with a removable cap F at the opposite end. To the tube G is fitted a stopper G, of cork or other suitable material, which supports the small tube H in the axis of the tube 0. The ends of the tube H are notched, and on opposite sides thereof, near opposite ends, are secured longitudinal ribs a, which are screw-threaded to receive caps I I, which fit over the ends of the tube H and extend toward the center of the tube 0, pastthe right-angled ends of the tube-sections A B. The cap I is provided with a small ring I) on the closed end thereof for receiving the hook by which the tube H and parts connected therewith are withdrawn from the tube 0. The smoke drawn through the cigar or pipe holder takes the path indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2, passing down the tubesection A into the tube C, thence along the outer surface of the cap I, thence between the cap I and the tube H through the space between the ribs a, thence into the notched end of the tube H, then through the tube into the cap I, thence between the cap and the tube I-I, between the threaded ribs a, thence along the outer surface of the cap I, thence through the tube-section B .to the mouth-piece E. The smoke in following this course is forced to pass through a long distance and is made to change its course several times, so that all matters contained by the smoke which are capable of being condensed will be condensed in the tube 0 and retained therein, instead of being drawn into the mouth of the smoker.

To strengthen and stiffen the holder, I connect the tube-sections A B by means of a brace J, soldered to the angles of the tubes. When it is desired to remove the contents of the tube 0 and clear the tube H and caps I, the cap F is removed from the tube 0, the tube H is drawn out of the tube 0 by means of the ring I), when the tube 0 may be wiped out, and the caps I I may be unscrewed from the tube H and the several parts readily cleaned, when they maybe again replaced in position for use. It it obvious that the tube 0 may withadvantage be capped at both ends.

Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a cigar or pipe holder, of the perforated stopper G, the tube H, supported thereby, and the caps I I, inclosing the end of the tube H, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the tube 0 of a cigar or pipe holder,'of the stopper G and the small tube H, supported thereby and provided with the threaded caps I I, received on the threaded ribs to and inclosing the ends of the tube H, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with the offset tube per G, fitted to the tube 0, the tube I-I, having notched ends and provided with the threaded ribs a, the internally-threaded cap I, the internally-threaded cap I, provided 15 with the ring I), the cap F, closing the end of the tube 0, the conical holder D, and the mouth-piece E, substantially as described.
