F. E. PHILLIPS. MARBLE ROLLER.
Patented June 23,1891.
J .fl 11 if Emu... v 1 L Winems: frwezzar rTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FI'IZ E. PHILLIPS, OF \VEYAUWEGA, WISCONSIN.
MARBLE-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,603, dated June 23, 1891.
Application filed March 4, 1891. Serial No. 333,720. (No model.)
and use it, reference being had to the accom-,
panying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in marble-rollers; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter.
The object ofmy invention is to produce a' device which is adaptedfor rolling marbles, and which is also adapted to be attached to toyavhip handles, canes, and billiard-cues.
Figurel is a side elevation of a device to which my invention' is applied, the plunger being shown as extended. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same showing the plunger forced inward.
A represents the handle, which has an opening or socket of any suitable depth made in one end, and placed in this socket is a coiled spring B of any kind. Placed in the outer end of the socket and having its inner end bearing against the outer end of the spring is the plunger or piston (l, of anysuitable length, and through which is formed the slot D, which is made slightly longer at one side than the other at its inner end.
Secured to the outer side of the handle near its inner end is the spring catch or trigger I, which extends almost parallel with the handle until it reaches its end, and then the catch or trigger is bent at right angles, so as to pass through the slot in the piston. or
plunger, and the end J of the spring is then.
turned at such an angle as to adapt it to catch in the notch or recess 0, made at or near the outer end Oftlle slot, and which extends at an angle thereto. The elasticity of the spring catch or trigger causes its outturned end to snap into the recess 0 whenever the plunger is forced inward sufficiently far to allow it to do so. lVhen the piston is forced inward,
the spring in the handle is compressed and the end of the spring catch or trigger snaps into the notch or recess 0 and holds the plunger in that position until the spring catch or trigger is operated. When pressure is applied to the trigger or catch, its end J is forced out of the notch, and then the spring forces the piston or plunger outward the full length of the slot. That part of the end of the spring catch or trigger which extends through the slot serves to limit the outward throw of the plunger, and by having one side of the inner end of the slot made deeper or longer than the other the edge of the slot strikes against the trigger at or near the point where it is bent at right angles. so as to pass through the slot, and hence there is less liability to straighten out this end than there would be if the end of the slot were made evenly across. After the.plungerl1as been forced into the handle the end of the plunger is placed near a marble and then the trigger is operated, and the plunger in flying out strikes the marble so as to roll it in any desired direction.
This device is also adapted to be attached to toy-whip handles, canes, and billiard-cues. Ifit is desired to roll the ball or marble only a short distance, the end of the plunger is held farther away from it; but if it is desired to roll the ball or marble to its greatest distance then the end of the plunger is placed near to or against it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a device for rolling marbles or balls, a hollow handle, a spring placed therein, and a slotted piston or plunger provided with a shoulder, combined with a spring catch or trigger connected to the handle and which has its end bent so as to pass through the slot and engage the said shoulder, substantially as shown and described.
In tes imony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
