Description

I. W. ALLYN. Apparatus for Raising Grates.
No. 44,844. Patented Nov. 1. 1864.
Fey 1 my? J J7 1 ti 1 110740255525 nap/e l'r'4 zfize Wm UNITED STATES PATENT l T it a ISAAC W. ALLYN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
APPARATUS FOR RAISING GRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 441,844, dated November l, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC W. ALLYN, of Philadelphia. Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Device for Raising Stove-Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
eference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in certain devices fully described hereinafter for raising and lowering the grates of stoves and heaters, and t' ereby increasing or dnninishin g the capacity of the tire place, raising the'ignited fuel into close proximity to the culinary vessels, or lowering it when the ovens have to be heated.
in order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the fireplace of a stove or heater, showing my improved device for raising and lowering the grate. Fig. 2 is a front view, and Fig. 3 a. plan view.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A and A are the opposite sides, and B is the back of the fire-place of a stove or heater, and on a let ge, a projecting from the sides and back rests the tire-brick lining O. In the front of the fire-place is the vertical grate D, the lower edge of whichis on a line with the top of the ledge a. To this ledge a, on each side of the fire-place, are hung two cam-shaped levers,
1 and F, to the projecting arms of which ist jointed a bar, G, the latter being connected by 3 a cross-bar, H, to the bar G, hung to the camshaped levers on the opposite side of the fireplace. Upon the rounded ends of the levers F rests an oblong metal frame I, which fits loosely in the fire place and within this frame is horizontal grate J, the front end of the grate being supported by a detachable pin, 0, which passes through the frame, and the rear end by lugs 61 d, which project from the rides of the grate, and rest in suitable depressions in the frame.
When it is desired to have a large fire to heat the oven for baking or similar purposes, the horizontal grate I should be brought to the position shown in the drawings. WVhen, however, it is required to rapidly heat the contents of vessels on the stove, or to have the fi1 e near the surface for broiling, the grate J should be elevated by turning the levers F in the direction of their arrows, anysuitable instrument being applied to the cross-bar H, so as to move the levers in the required direction.
The ashes may be at any time removed from the fire-place by withdrawing the pin 0 and allowing the forward end of the grate J to fall.
it will be apparent that a device of the above description is simple and inexpensive; that it can be readily operated and is not liable to become clogged by the ashes or rendered unserviceable from the warping of the grate by heat. It will also be seen that such a device in no manner interferes with the operation of the grate when the ashes have to be removed.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters PateLt-- The cam-shaped levers F, hung to the sides of the fireplace and operating on the horizon tal grate of a stove or range substantially as ISA AC W. ALLYN.
