Description

(No Model.)
E. OAPITAINE. LAMP FOR EPFEGTING THE IGNITION OF VAPOR IN GAS OR OTHEBMOTORS.
Patented Mar.. 17, 1891.,
UNITED STATES PATENT Orricm EMIL CAPITAINE, OF EILENBURG, GERMANY.
LAMP FOR EFFECTING THE IGNITION OF VAPOR IN GAS OR OTHER MOTORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.- 448,293, dated March 17, 1891.
Application filed July 15, 1890.
TO aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL CAPITAINE, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Em peror, residing in the city of Eilenburg, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Lamp for Effecting the Ignition of Vapor in Gas and Petroleum Motors; and I do hereby dcclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for effecting the ignition of vapor in gas and petroleum motors for which an intense fiame is required, and especially toalamp fed with heavy oil under pressure from a reservoir located above it.
The object of the nvention is to do away with a serious evil in lamps of the said kind in which the vaporization of the oil takes place by fits and starts, especially when the flame is somewhat large, burning unevenly. and frequently going out. The cause ot' this is that the oil column has a to-and-fro movement, brought about partly by the feed and partly by the sudden formation of vapor following thereon and the forcing back of the oil column.
Instead of a large vapor-space, presenting the disadvantage that the lamp has to be heated during a lengthy interv-al of time, I apply in close proximity to the vaporizingsurface an air-vesse1 which every time the lamp is extinguished becomes f reshly charged with air.
The invention consists in the application to an oil-lamp of an air-vessel in combination with a cock of peculiar Construction for opening and shutting off communication with the oi1-supp1y,and by which at the same time the air-vessel is charged with air every time the lamp is extinguished.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of the lamp with a portion of the cylinder of a gas or petroleum motor; Fig. 2, a section through line ye of Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4, sectional views of the cock with the plug of the same set in different positions.
Serial No. 358,799. (No model.)
A is the oil-supply pipe leading from an oil-reservoir (not shown) placed about three feet higher than the lamp; B, a three-way cock; C, an air-vessel, and D a vaporizingpipe, only the upper end of which serves for vaporizing, and which to commence with is heated by a spirit-fiame and later by a fiame at E, which is the outlet for the generated vapor.
F is the igniting pipe or chamber; G, the chimney; H, a portion of the cylinder of a gas or petroleum motor, and I the combustionspace.
In the position of cock shown in Fig.. 1 the oil Will flow from the supply-pipe A into the air-vessel C, where the air is somewhat compressed, and thence into pipe D. Previously, however, the upper part a; of this pipe is heated by means of a spirit-fiame, so that oil passing into this part of the pipe is transformed into vapor, which passes out at aperture E, and to commence with is there ignited by the spirit-flame, this latter being kept applied until pipe F and the asbestus strip N over it becomes glowing hot, so as to burn the vapor from E as it comes in contact therewith. In the position of cock shown in' Fig. 3 the fiame goes out, oil passing from pipe D into the air-vessel, discharging thence through pipe c, air from the outside at the same time passing through aperture E into pipe D and air-vessel C, so as to fully charge this again.
iVhatI claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the ai r-vessel C, the upright tube D, eXtending from the bottom thereof, the tube A, commnnicating with the bottom of the air-vessel and With a reservoir, the oil-cock B within said tube, and the pipe g, conmunicating with a passage-way of the oil-cock.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
u EMIL CAPITAINE. Witnesses:
