PRESERV=JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 447,479, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed October 29, 1890. Serial No. 369.696. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED STELZNEE, a suhject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at lViesbaden, in Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Preserve-J ars, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to a preserve-jar so constructed as to effectively exclude the air from the contents of the jar.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical central section of my improved preserve-jar. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 an enlarged section through the joint.
The letter A represents a preserve-jar ot' suitable form and material. This jar has formed on the inner face of its neck an upwardly-extending flange o", and behind the same an annular groove 'i'. `The flange r is lower than the neck, so that when an inner cover d is placed upon the flange it will be substantially flush with the upper edge of the neck, as shown in Fig. 3. In use the jar is filled and some of the juice is poured into the groove yr. The lid cl is then put in place and is covered by a piece g of pigs bladder' or similar material. This piece of bladder is of sufficient length to extend over groove h. next slipped into the groove, will hold the bladder in place. Finally the lid d is forced down to compress the gasket and form a tight joint.
The jar when sealed, as described, is placed into a bath of boiling water.
To remove the lid CZ but moderate force is necessary. Between the two lids d d a small space should be left to permit a proper adjustment of the outer lid.
lf desired, the flange d2 may be provided with a shoulder cl3, and a similar shoulder a may be formed around the jar A. Around the shoulders die a string a is passed which is knotted and has sealed ends. Thus the jar cannot be opened without breaking the seal.
W'hat I claim isl. The combination of a -j ar having an inner flange r and an outer groove h with an inner cover d, an outer cover d', having tapering flange cl2, and'with a gasket k, adapted to be receivedv by groove h, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a jar having an inner flange o" and groove 0' and an outer groove h with a gasket k, an inner cover cl, and an outer cover CZ', having an internally-corrugated lange (Z2, adapted to compress the gasket, substantially as specified.
