JOSEPH FORSHAXV, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
MATCH-BOX AND HOLDING-FRAME THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,336, dated February 10, 1891.
Application filed August 5 1889. Serial No. 319,813. (No model.) v
To aZZ whom, it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH FoRsHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri. have invented a certain new and useful Improved Frame or Holder for Match-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a frame or holder for match-boxes, and has for its object to protect a match-box from being broken or crushed when carried in the pocket or otherwise used and so obviate accidental ignition of the matches contained in the box.
It consists in features of novelty, as hereinafter claimed.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved frame or holder applied to an ordinarysliding match-box; Fig. 2, a similar view of the holderdetached; and Fig. 3,a,perspective view of a modification thereof, like figures of reference denoting like parts in all the figures.
My improved holder, which may be made of metal or other suitable material, consists of a rear end frame 1, preferably of a square or rectangular shape, provided on its rear edge with an inwardly-projecting flange 2, an opening 2 somewhat smaller than the end of the match-box, sliding tray 7 being in said end intermediate the flanges. In line with the rear end frame 1 and at a suitable distance therefrom, according to the length of the box to be protected, is a rectangular-shaped frame 3, which I term the front frame, said frame 3 having a central opening 4 therein corresponding in size and shape with the end of the match-box.
The rear and front frames 1 and 3 are united at the corners externally by angle-strips 5, the whole forming a square or rectangularshaped skeleton frame, within which a matchbox 6 is inserted endwise through the opening i of the front frame 3, so that the inner end edge of the match-box 6 abuts against the inside of flange 2 on the rear frame 1. At the same time by means of the opening 2 in the rear frame the tray 7 of the matchbox 6 can be pushed forward and access obtained to the matches in the usual manner Without removing the match-box 6 from the holder.
If desired, a portion of striking material 8, as usually supplied on the side of a matchbox, may be fixed along either or both of the open sides of the holder, as seen in Fig.
I claim 1. In a match-box holder, the combination of a rear end frame 1, having opening 2, front end frame 3, having opening 4, and anglestrips 5, connecting the corners of said frames with an inclosed match-box 6, having the sliding tray 7, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a match-box holder, the combination of a rear end frame 1, having opening 2, front end frame 3, having opening 4, angle-strips 5, connecting the corners of said frames, and ignition material located in the side of said holder intermediate the angle-strips, substantially as and for the purposes described,
3. A match-box holder of skeleton form, consistin g of two end frames corresponding to the cross-section of the box to be protected, and anglestrips connecting the corners of said frames, one of said end frameshaving inwardly-proj ecting flanges, substantially as and for the purposes described.
