J. W. GARRETT. WAGON JACK.
No. 444,347. Patented Jan. 6, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. GARRETT, OF CASEY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES F. JOHNSON, OF SAME PLACE.
WAGON-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 444,347, dated January 6, 1891.
Application tiled September 25, 1890. Serial No. 366,134. 'No model.)
To all whom, it nza/y concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. GAREETT, a citizen Of the United States of America, residing at Casey, in the county Of Clark and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Wagon-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art tO which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part Of this specification.
This invention relates tO certain new and useful improvements in lifting-jacks.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective lifting or wagon jack; and it consists in the construction hereinafter described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated my invention by a perspective view.
A refers to the base, to which the standard B is rigidly secured and braced by the bar C. The standard has a tenon formed on its lower end, which enters a mortise in the base. and is locked in position by the bent end of the catch-rod D, which passes through a perforation in the base and standard, the end thereof being bent at right angles, as shown. This catch-rod has its upper end formed into a loop which passes `Over the lever E, the upper cross-bar of said loop being adapted to engage with one of the recesses e e, formed in the upper edge Of the lever.
F refers to a bracket which is made up of a single flat piece of metahbent as shown and secured at its lower end to the side of the standard. This bracket serves as a support for the fulcrum-pin G, which passes through a perforation in the same and enters the standard opposite thereto.
The lever E, hereinbefore referred to, is provided with a segmental slot II, which extends diagonally across said lever, the upper portion Of said slot having formed therein recesses I, with which the fulcrum-pin can engage, the lever adjacent to these slots being increased in width, so that it will not be materially weakened. By providing the lever with a slot constructed as described the end of the same can be positioned to occupy different heights.
The lifting-j ack hereinbefore described can be cheaply manufactured, and is easily ma nipulated and effective in operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A lifting-jack comprisingthe baseA, a standard having its tenon bearing therein, a bracket F, secured on said standard, for maintaining One end Of a fulcrum-pin, the other end Of said pin being secured in the standard, and a lever E, provided with a verticallyinclined slot, having its upper wall provided with a series of depressions, the said lever being of increased thickness adjacent to said slot, together with a locking-bar having its lower end bent to pierce the base and standard-tenon and its upper end engaging with the lever, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES IV. GARRETT.
I/Vitnesses;
CEAS. F. JOHNSON, CHAs. H. COLLINS.
