CURTAIN-POLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,230, dated January 6, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUsrAvUs E. STEAUss, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ourtain-Poles, of which the following is a speci- .cation This invention has reference to an improved curtain-pole of that class that is intended to be used for curtains, lambrequins, portires, and the like, said curtains being readily applied without the use of tacks, hooks, pins, screws, or other fastening devices, and thereby conveniently suspended without tearing or damaging the curtains in the least; and the invention consists of a curtain-pole made of two hinged semicircular sections which are connected by clamping-bolts and screw-nuts, so as to be firmly applied to the curtains, which are clamped between the sections of the pole. The curtain-pole is provided with slots or openings for the suspension-bolts that are attached by screw-nuts to the supportingbrackets of the pole, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of my improved curtain-pole. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverse sections of the pole respectively on lines x and y y, Fig. 2.

In the drawings, A and A represent the two semicircular sections of my improved hollow curtain-pole, which sections are connected at one side by hinges o. a, while at the opposite side they are applied to the curtains to be suspended from the pole. The sections A A are connected by fastening-.bolts B and thumb-nuts B', which are screwed onto the ends of said bolts, said bolts being attached to the section A and passed through slots b of the section B. By the connecting bolts and nuts a positive clamping action of the sections A A on the goods is obtained, so that the reliable suspension of the curtains or hanging material is obtained.` The curtainpole A A is suspended from supportingbrackets C C, which are attached inthe usual manner to the wall by means of hangers D, whichare provided at the lower end with an arc-shaped piece D', that is inserted into slots or openings CZ in theupper part of the pole and placed transversely thereto. The slots or openings d are formed of adjoining recesses in the upper parts of the semicircular sections A A', as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The hangers D are threaded at their upper ends and clamped by thumb-nuts-D2 and washers d to the arms of the supporting-brackets C, so that the pole is thereby firmly supported on the brackets C. The hanger D is readily inserted by placing its hanger-plate D', in line with the slot d and then turning the hanger so as to place the hanger-plate D transversely or at right angles to the slot (l, in which position the clamping-connection with the supportingbracket C is made. In this manner the simple suspension of the curtain-pole is obtained. The pole-sections may be made of Wood, metal, or other suitable material and provided with ornamental pole ends of any suitable shape.

The advantages of my improved curtainpole are that by the same the hanging material may be suspended without attaching the same to the poles, so as to obviate the objectionable fastening of lace and other expensive curtains. As the clamping action is given by the sections of the pole, all special fastening devices may be dispensed with, and thereby the curtain be removed or replaced without requiring specially skilled hands for this purpose.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty 1. The combination, with hollow semicircular sections hinged together at one side, of fastening-bolts attached tothe inside of one section and extended through slots of the other section, and screw-nuts applied to the outer threaded ends of the fastening-bolts, substantially as set forth.
