BRIDLE.

Be it known that I, HENRY G. BRENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brunswick, in the county of Charlton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful 311idlc, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to harness, and more particularly to that class thereof known as bridlesg and the object of the same is to effect improvements upon devices of this general character heretofore existing.

To this end the invention consists of a bridle constructed of a single piece of rope led from one side of the horses head above, below, and around the same to the other side thereof, in a manner more fully described hereinafter, and illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of this improved bridle, taken from the left side and showing it as applied to a horses head, the latter being designated in outline by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation showing the throat-latch as adjusted so as to be smaller and the attachment of the brow-band set farther to the rear. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation showing one-half of the bridle with the headstall adjusted to greater length.

Referring to the said drawings, the letter B designates a bit of any suitable construction, which is inserted in the horses mouth, and L are links connected to the bit, as shown.

My improved bridle comprises a single piece of rope, of any suitable size and material, arranged as follows: Starting from the pointA at the left side of the head the rope passes through a loop O, over the crown of the head in a crown-piece coil C, around and through a loop O at the other side of the head, thence down into the throat-latch T, thence back through a similar loop O at the left side of the head, through which the end A wasalso passed, thence up through a throat-knot K at the left side of the head and again over the crown in the crown-piece coil C, through the twist YV of the brow-band, down one side of the head in the headstall H, through one of the links L and back through the next twist WV, thence into the throat-knot K at the right side of the head, thence up through the brow-band knot D at the center of the brow- Serial No. 3 5 8, 31 8. band and into the twist WV thereof, down the left side of the brow, forming the loop O, and returning loosely through the brow-band throat-knot D, down the right side, forming the loop O at that side of the head and rethe brow -band knot D, thence down the left side of the head into the throat-knot K, thence through the twist XV, along one cheek in the headstall Il, through the other of the links L, and back through the next twist, thence over the crown in the crown-piece coil C to complete the throat-knot K at the right side of the head, thence passing through the right loop O, and terminating at the point Z.

The throat-latch T of this bridle may be adjusted in length, as shown in Fig. 2, by drawing the point A through the loop O, which draws upon the cord within the coil C and draws through the right loop O, thereby reducing the length of the throat-latch, the other end of which is fast in the left throat-knot K. The adjustment of the brow-band is effected by throwing the brow-band knot D farther down or higher up upon the horses nose. This movement is effected by loosening the double knot D and sliding the rope through thel throat-knot and into or out of the half of the twist W at the opposite side of the head. The vadjustment of the length of the headstall is effected by loosening the throat-knots K and sliding the cord from the headstall into said knots or from the knots into the headstall, as will be clearly understood.

Abridle constructed in accordance with the above description will possess adjustability sufficient to permit of its being applied to various-sized horses heads, and yet it has no buckles or snap-hooks.

The bridle is composed of a single piece of rope and is quite an ornament. The ends A and Z may be knotted and frayed out, as shown, if desired, and the rope may be composed of strands of different colors. The triple coil at the crown of the head and the twist over the brow, supplemented by the double knot, all assist in ornamenting this improved bridle, as well as serving their respective functions, as described above.
