SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,041, dated January 6, 1891.

T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN \V. BRACKET'I and HORATIO N. MOORE, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, and at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, respectively, have invented certain Improvements in Repeating-Actions forPiano-Fortes, of which the following is a specification.
To Our invention relates to repeating-actions for piano-fortes in which are used a key, an extension, a hammer and stem, also adamper and lever, all of the usual form.
Our invention relates to a combination of a I 5 new form of hammer-butt pivoted directly to a new form of rocker for a point of motion, and has its travel and position governed by a stop-screw projecting from the rocker to meet the under curved edge of the butt. Said 2o rocker is hung withaflange-jointin the usual manner.. The lever carrying said catch is hung at one end near the middle of the rocker, and the movement of the free end is followed by a spring and governed by aregulating screw and button, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Our invention consists in a new form of hammer-butt which is pivoted in a new form of rocker at its rear end for a point of motion, and has its position and travel governed by a stop-screw projecting from the rocker and coming in contact with a cushion on the under edge of the butt. Said butt has an arm projecting obliquely from its free end carrying a triple trip-stop which serves for three purposes: first, to prevent the rebound of the hammer after the string has been struck; second, to permit the momentum of the hammer to reach the string even with a very light and rapid touch; third, to aid the hammer to its position of rest when its work is completed. \Ve provide, also, a trip-catch to act in connection with the triple trip-stop, a lever carrying the said catch pivoted at or near the middle point of the rocker. The movement of the free end of the lever is followed by a spring, and the motion of the triplever when the piano-key has been struck is governed and regulated by the regulating screw and button.
Our invention also consists of a separate 6o damper-rail for the purpose of removing the dampers from the action, and to facilitate the regulating and adjusting of the several parts of the action and dampers, together with an extended extension-link, for the purpose of carrying the trip to operate the damper-lever, all as particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a sectional elevation of a key, extension, rocker, hammer, and damper, and illustrates the several parts and features of our invention; and Fig. 2 represents a partial elevation of the same, but showing modified features of our invention.
In Fig. l, A designates the key, B the extension, II the hammer and stem, I the damper and lever, all of which do not diifer essentially from those ordinarily used in upright actions. Our invention relates to the parts mentioned when combined with the other allied but new and improved parts shown in said figure, to wit, the new form of hammerbutt a, pivoted at its lower end at d in the new form of rocker A at its rear end for a point of motion, and having its position and travel governed by the stop-screw c, projecting from the rocker A and coming in contact with the under edge of the butt a, said butt having an arm Z) projecting obliquely from its free end, 9o carrying a triple trip-stop Z) c, which serves for three purposes, namely: first, to prevent the rebound of the hammer H after the string 3 has been struck; second, by means of the hook c to permit the momentum of the hammer H to reach the string 8 even with a very light and rapid touch of the key A; third, by means of the hook c to aid the hammer H to its position of rest after its work has been accomplished. The trip-catch l1 acts in con- ICo nection with the trip-stop b. The lever a carries thesaid catch 1), pivoted at the point 0" near the middle of the rocker A, the movement of the free end of the lever a being followed by a spring a, and the motion of the lever a" when the key has been struck is governed and regulated by the regulating screw and button 0. 4
F is a separate damper-rail for the purpose of removing the damper and lever F from the action to facilitate the regulating and adjusting of the several parts of the action and dampers.
B is an extended extension-link pivoted centrally at k and operated by the extension B for the purpose of carrying the trip f to operate the damper-lever F when the key has been put in motion.
In Fig. 2 the position of the trip'stop b and the trip-catch b" are reversed. The trip-catch b is carried by the post and lever a, pivoted to the front end of the rocker A at the point 0", and has the free end of the lever a followed by the spring a, the motion being governed by the regulating screw and button 0 coming in contact with the rail P. The trip-hook c is located in the rocker A and acts upon the hammer-butt a in a recess at the point f, permitting the momentum of the hammer to reach the string with any degree of touch and at the same time assuring the return of the hammer to its normal position. The spring f is secured to the rocker A, with its free end operating upon the hammer-butt a, and may be used instead of the trip-hook c, Fig. 1.
By reference to the foregoing description and to the drawings the operation of the several parts will be readily understood by those familiar with the art.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a key A, extension B, hammer, and stem H, of the hammerbutt a, pivoted to the rocker A at the point d, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a key, extension, hammer, and stem, of a hammer-butt, as described, pivoted to a rocker, as described, at a point d, and means, as the stop-screw c,projecting from the rocker A to meet the under edge of the said hammer-butt a, for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with a key, extension, hammer, and stem, of the hammer-butt a, pivoted to the rocker A, the stop-screw c, the said hammer-butt a having extended obliquely from its upper end an arm 12, carrying the triple trip-stop b c, for the purposes described.
4. The combination, with a key, extension, hammer, and stem, of the described hammerbutt pivoted to the described rocker, the stopscrew c, said hammer-butt having extended 65 from its upper end obliquely an arm I), carrying the triple trip-stop b c, for the purposes described, the said rocker having a trip-lever, as a, pivoted at the point 0, the free end of the said lever being followed by a spring a, combined with the regulating screw and button c, for the purposes herein described.
5. The combination, with a key, extension, hammer, and, stem, of the described hammerbut-t pivoted to a rocker, as described, the stop-screw c, said hammer-butt having extended from its upper end obliquely an arm carrying a triple trip-stop, operating as described and for the said purposes, the said rocker A having the trip-lever a, pivoted at the point e, the free end of the lever a being followed by the spring a, combined with the regulating screw and button 0, an independent damper-rail F, in combination with the damper F, for the purposes described, and an extended extension-link B, in combination with the trip f and the damper F.
