Description

(No Model.)
0. H. GARDNER.
SGAFFOLD FASTENING.
No. 432.996. Patented July 29, 1890.
LAW
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER H. GARDNER, OF NEXV BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO TIMOTHY J. OOUGHLAN, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 432,996, dated July 29, 1890.
Application tiled March 29, 1890. Serial No. 345,855, (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER H. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scaitold-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device by means of which scaifolding may be clamped together without injuring or weak ening it, so that it may be used again and again; and it consists in a round bar of metal having mounted thereon eecentrically a roller provided with a lever, by means of which it may be partially revolved on its axis, and a chain provided at one end with a hook and secured to said bar and adapted to embrace the upright and ledger of a scaffolding to secure them together and be tighten ed by means of said eccentrically-mounted roller on said shaft.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention as it appears when in use, and Fig. 2 represents a front view of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
a represents the upright of a section of scafltolding, and 1) represents the horizontal beam, or, as it is commonly called, the ledger.
0 represents a round bar of metal, provided with a head 2', and having loosely mounted thereon the eccentric roller (1, provided with the handle or lever h.
g represents a chain, one end of which is provided with a hook e.
The bar a is passed through the eccentric roller d, and then through a link in the chain g near the hook. The end of the bar 0 is then upset or provided with some suitable device to prevent the chain from slipping oif.
The operation of the device is as follows: The ledger being held in place on the upright, the device is placed against it with the thin part of the eccentric roller bearing against the ledger and the lever h uppermost, as shown in Fig. 1. The'chain g is then carried upward and around the upright a and forward over the bar 0 and under the ledger and again around the upright, and then forward and secured to the hook e. Theeccentric d is then partially revolved on its axis by means of the lever it until the chain is suificiently tight to hold the ledger in place, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A scaffold-fastening device consisting of a round bar of metal having loosely mounted thereon eccentrically a metallic roller provided with a lever, by means of which it may be rotated on its axis, a chain provided at one end with a hook and secured to said bar, and adapted to embrace the upright and ledger, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
OLIVER H. GARDNER.
