Be it known that I, HEDWIG PHILIP, born SOHEUER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, a resident of Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hygienic Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in corsets, and the same comprises the detail construction and arrangement, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter fully set forth, and particu- In order to make my invention more clearly understood, I will describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation ot my hygienic corset; Fig. 2, a side view, and Fig. 3 a back view thereof, while Fig. 4 again represents a front elevation With the lower front part broken away to better show the interior construction of my hygienic corset. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of my improved corset with parts broken away.

The fabric of my particular corset is cut open from the lower edge on both sides at the hip parts, so as to form two sections A and B, partly connected. To both of the edges aa of the back section A of the corset is attached by means of elastic gore c c a waist belt or bandage b, which extends over the front surface of and is adapted to suspend the whole abdomen. When the busks of the corset are closed, the lower portion of the front section B will cover the upper part of the bandage b.

The bandage b consists of two parts, which maybe connected, preferably, by lacing, eith er in the middle or on the sides, and it is provided with a sufficient number of brackets or 4hooks CZ d for the reception of the lower edge C of the front section B of the corset, in order to prevent the bandage from moving upward. These hooks, therefore, advantageously replace the usual thigh-belts generally employed whenever a separate bandage is required on account of abdominal disease.

On the lower edge of the bandage b and attached to either half of the same is an elastic belt ff', adapted to separately connect the lower front part of the bandage to the back strain occurring from the weight of theabdomen will be transmitted to the hip-bone Aand the spine of the wearer. After the band 55 age has been applied in this manner the busks in front of the corset may be closed, as usual, which can be easily effected, as the lower front section of the corset is separated from the back section; but in order to secure the 6o lower part C of the front section B of the corset to the back section A of the samethe laces or belts Z t', respectively attached on both sides to the lower edge of the front section of the corset, are slung around the hooks h h', 65 respectivelyfastened close to the lower edge of the back section A of thecorset and tied together, preferably above the abdomen, Fig. 2.

In case of local diseases-such as of the kidneys, milt, te-suitable girths or straps Zr, 7o connected to the back section A of the corset, may be laid over the organ to be attacked, and then secured by any suitable"` means to the bandage Z), said strap being provided with an apertured end for that purpose.

The corset itself is adapted to be extended sufficiently far in order to support the spine and the vertebra and at the same time to perform a continuation of bandage b around the waist of the wearer. For the same reason 8o and in order to prevent shrinkage of the back section of the corset the middle whalebones or similar elastic stays ZZ Z2 Z3, arranged in the direction of the spine, are made comparatively stiff, while it is preferable to terminate with the lower adjacent lateral whalebones m m', arranged parallel to the former, where they touch the outermost one of the upper series of the whalebones n n', which are runp ning at an oblique direction to the busks or 9o stays Z2 Z3, arranged in the direction of the spine. By the aid of this arrangement a certain hold will be applied to the shoulderblades as well as to the vertebra without exposing the organs to an inconvenient pressure. y

In consequence of the construction of my improved corset a throughout uniform pressure will be obtained upon all abdominal or gans, and it also admits at each place the aproo plication of pellets or other elast-ic or nonelastic cushions.' My corset therefore forms a convenient and perfect assistance in cases of relaxation of the muscles of the abdomen, after surgical operations have taken place which require the exposure of the abdominal organs, and in cases where single interior organs (kidneys, milt) become loose or slack, as through the conjunction of the bandage b with the corset and the supporting-brackets d d of the former, a uniform fit of the corset is accomplished. Finally it should be stated that by the aid of my hygienic corset a really true and safe fitting bandage to be closed in front may be applied to the abdomen while the wearer is in a reclining position, which could not be effected in such a perfect manner by any of the bandages hitherto known.

Having now fully described my invention,

what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters -Patent, is

l. The herein-described improved corset, comprising` the front and back sections partly connected, the bandage inclosed by said front section, the elastic gore connecting the ends of said bandage with said back section, and the adjustable connection between the lower edge of said bandage and said back section, substantially as set forth.

2. The herein-described improved corset, comprising the front and back sections partly connected, the bandage inclosed by said front section, the elastic gore connecting the ends of said bandage with said back section', and the elastic belt connected to the lower edge of said bandage and having an adjustable connection at its ends with said back section, substantially as set forth.

3. The herein-described improved corset, comprising the front and back sections partly connected, the bandage inclosed by said front section and having hooks or brackets for reception of the lower edge of said front section, and the yielding connection between Vsaid bandage andsaid back section, substantially as set forth.

4. As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed corset, consisting of the front and back sections partly connected, the bandage inclosed by said front section, the elastic con-A nection between the ends of said bandage and said back section, the adjustable connectio-n between the lower edge of said bandage and said back section, and the laces or belts 1l t', connected to said latter section and having their ends united, substantially as set forth.
