Description

Patented July 22, 1890.
(No Model.)
J. W. MOBERLY. WASHING MACHINE.
4 4w. 1 no WITNESSES. a 026, W
UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH WV. MOBERLY, OF MONTROSE, MISSOURI.
WASHING- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,832, dated July 22, 1890.
Application filed April 7, 1890.
T0 ally/ham it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WV. MOBERLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montrose, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in washing-machines.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, economical, and efficient washing-machine for washing clothes and fabrics of various kinds, and with which there are combined hand scrubbing-surfaces, whereby the clothes may be scrubbed by hand, if desired.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and definitely pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a central horizontal section of a washing-machine constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line a: 00, Fig. 1.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the sides of the tub, having the lower central portion curved and the under side of the ends inclined or made tapering.
3 designates the bottom.
at 4 designate legs secured to the sides by nails or screws or in any other suitable manner, by which the machine is supported.
As shown, the lower central portion of the tub is curved or rounded, forming a receptacle for the clothes to be washed. The bottom of this receptacle is provided with a number of transverse rods 6, extending from side to side thereof, which form the rubbers. The sides are also provided with a number of similar bars 7, set vertically therein.
The numeral 8 designates vertical standards secured to the sides 1 and having grooves 9 to receive the, journals or axles 1O ofthe hub 12. This hub is preferably octagonal in cross-section, and in the lower faces thereof Sen'al No. 346,924. (No model.)
are formed a number of holes to receive the inner ends of the radial arms 13, by which the clothes are reciprocated back and forth over and in contact with the rubbers 6 and 7, motion being imparted to said hub by means of the handle consisting of arms 15 and cross-bar 16.
At each end of the tub on the inclined bottom thereof I secure the metallic hand washing-surface consisting of metallic corrugated plates 20, attached to said bottom by screws or nails.
A cook or plug 18 may be provided in the lower part of the tub to draw off the water.
The operation will be readily understood. A suitable quantity of water is placed in the receptacle and the clothes to be washed placed therein, the hub 12 having previously been removed for such purpose. The hub is then replaced, the journals 10 thereof fitting in the grooves in the standards 8. A reciprocating rotary or oscillating motion is then given to the hub by means of the handle, which will cause the clothes to be moved back and forth over the rubbers, whereby they will be effectually cleansed.
The inclined corrugated plates 20 are employed for hand-scrubbing, when it is desired to wash the clothes by hand, either as an adj unct to or separate from the machine-washmg.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A washingmachine, consisting of the legs 4, the clothes-receptacle having the horizontal and vertical rubbers 6 and 7, and corrugated metal rubbing-surfaces 20, and the grooved standards 8, the hub 12, having journals 1O fitting in the grooves of the standards and provided with the radial arms 13 and with an operatinghandle, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH W. MOBERLY.
