' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK FELT, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,025, dated July 15, 1890.
Application filed August 20, 1889. $erial No. 321,379. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK FELT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Type-IVriting Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a toy type-writer; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed;
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my toy type-writer. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the base, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the type-bar.
In carrying out my invention I construct the base or platen A of a block or plate having the ridge B running longitudinally of its center and provided with the parallel slots C G on opposite sides of the said ridge, the said slots being open at one end, as clearly shown. The walls of the slots diverge, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, and a central bar or platen D is thereby provided, over which the paper is passed. The outer walls of the slots are inclined considerably more than the inner walls, so that the paper will not be folded and creased in its passage through the device. The base-plate has its inner corners cut away at the end of the platen, as shown at E, so that the paper may be easily inserted over the platen. 011 the upper side of the base and on opposite sides of the platen I secure the ink-pads F F, as clearly shown.
The type bar or head consists of a flat bar of suitable size and of some light material and has its ends reduced and formed into cylindrical handles G G, by means of which the bar may be easily rotated in the operation of the device. The typefaces are formed on strips H, which are secured to the edges of the type-head, and they may be secured on the outer surface of these edges or they may be seated in longitudinal grooves or recesses therein, so that they will be prevented from spreading and their shape consequently maintained. On the sides of the type-headl provide the indicator-plates I I, which denote which letters and figures are on each edge of ter on the exposed portion of the paper. The
type-head is arranged transversely in the base, so that each time it is depressed to print a letter the remaining letters are brought into contact with the pads and thereby inked. The indicator-plates on the sides of the typeheads will show when the desired letter is in position to print and also when it is necessary to rotate the type-head in order to bring the upper edge into position for printing. The characters are arranged in two series, one series being secured on each edge of the type-head, so that a large number of characters can be arranged in a small space.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that I have provided a toy which is composed of very few parts, and the said parts are simple in their construction, so that the device can be manufactured and sold at a trifling cost. The toy is simple in its operation, so that its use can be easily learned, and it will be found advantageous in teaching spelling. The reduced cylindrical formation of the ends of the type-head enables the user to readily rotate the same in his fingers, so that a fair speed can be obtained. The paper is shifted manually after each line has been printed, and for this reason it is preferable to use ruled paper.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a toy type-writer, the base consisting of a plate having a central longitudinal ridge and parallel slots on opposite sides of the said ridge open at one end of the base, as set forth.
2. In a toy type-writer, the base eonsistmy own I have hereto afi'ixed my signature in ing of a plate having a central longitudinal presence of two witnesses. ridge and parallel slots on opposite sides of said ridge open at one end of the base, the FRANK FELT 5 corners of the base at said open end being WVitnesses:
rounded off, as and for the purpose set forth. E. P. CHAPIN, I11 testimony that I claim the foregoing as B. B. HALTER.
