TOOL-HANDLE.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be itknown that I, ALEXANDER II. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Nashington, in the District of O- lumbia,l1ave invented a new and useful Tool- Handle, of which the following is a specifica- 7 tion.

My invention relates to attachments for tool-handles of that kind adapted to be grasped and operated by the hand of the workman, such as screw-driver handles and similar tools the handles of which are grasped by, pressed upon, and turned in the hand while being applied to their uses.

The frictional wear upon the hand in turning a screw-driver is a feature which the inventors in the art have sought to remove or prevent, and this is the object of my invention, which consists in the attachment for a tool-handle of the construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side view showing the invention applied to a common wooden handle. Fig. 2 is a similar View in quarter-turn from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse central section of Fig. 2. Fig. lis a modified form of the base-piece. Fig. 5 is adetail View of the invention.

A designates a common wooden handle for tools of the kind intended, having a ferrule 1 and shank-hole 2, and having fiat sides 3, as usual. This form of handle has become the one most used in the trade. The head of the handle may be cut square off, as at 4:, to form a seat for the cap-piece. This cap-piece consists of a cap-piece 5, fitted to the top of the handle and provided with downwardlyextended side pieces or flanges 6, having holes in them to receive fastening means, substantially as shown. Small nails or screws 7 can be employed as the fastening means,or the flanges may be formed with a tongue on the inner faces, as seen in Fig. 4, which fits tight in a groove cut in the opposite faces of the handle. In the center of the cap-piece is formed a hole 8 to take the pintle 9 of the palm-piece.

B designates the palm-piece. This consists of a substantial metal piece having a rounded outer surface and an under surface on the same plane as the upper face of the cap-piece, upon which it loosely rests. In the center of the under face of the palm-piece is a stout pintle 9, which fits in the hole 8 of the cappiece, and,having its end swaged, thickened, or headed, forms a bearing on which the palmpiece turns. The pintle-hole may be countersunk at its lower end to give space for the head of the pintle.

The handle illustrated, it will be observed, is of the preferred construction, and is not weakened or mutilated by the changes consequent in the application of my invention, While by the application of my journaled palm-piece the peculiar return-grip of the hand in use, made without releasing the end pressure on the tool, may be effected Without the detrimental frictional movement of the palm over the surface of a fixed head or palmpiece or non-rotatable handle end. The operative manipulation of the tool is that usual in handles fixed to the shank of the blade of a screw-driverand will be readily understood by any person in the trade.

My invention may be made and, sold independently of the handle to which it is to be attached, and may be applied thereto by squaring or forming the end or head of the handle and fitting the cap with a palm-piece thereto. I therefore claim the cap and palmpiece as a new article of manufacture.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

The attachment for a tool-handle herein described, consisting of a cap-piece 5,having a fiat upper surface with a central aperture, and downwardly-extended side pieces to set against the sides of a tool-handle, and the palm-piece B, having a flat under surface to rest 011 the face of the cap-piece, a rounded upper surface, and a central pintle journaled in the aperture of the cap-piece, substantially as described.
