FOLDING'TSQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,809, dated June 24, 1890. Application led October 29, 1889. Serial No. 328,534. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WV. OLIVER, of the city, county, and State of New York,have invented a new and Improved T-Square, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved T-square adapted to be conveniently folded up for transportation and easily extended and unfolded for use.
The invention consists of 'a head comprising two arms pivoted to the blade and adapted to be folded thereon or extended in line with each other and at angles to the blade.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts in all the Iigures.

The improved T-square A is provided with a blade B, made in several sections B' B2, &c., and of the heads C and D, held near one end of the blade B, at opposite sides of the same. The blade-section B' is provided on its outer 4end with a metallic binding E, and a similar binding E' is formed on the adjoining end of the section B2. A screw E2 is formed in the middle of the binding E', as is plainly shown in Fig. 2, and is adapted to screw into a nut E2, formed on the binding E of the bladesection B'. From the screw E2 extends a pin E, adapted to iit into a corresponding aperture E?, formed in the blade-section B'. The pin E4 is slightly less in diameter than the screw E2, so that when the two blade-sections are to be fastened together the pin E4 is passed through the nut E3 into the opening E5, and then the screw E2 is screwed into the nut E3 until the edges of the bindings E and E' abut against each other, as is plainly shown in Fig. 3.
In order to lock the two blade-sections B' and B2 in place, I provide sliding bolts E, held to slide in suitable recesses in the bladesection B', and adapted to engage corresponding recesses E7,formed in the binding E' of the blade-section B2. Each of the sliding bolts E6 is provided with a knob E8, projecting through a slot E9, formed in the top of the blade-section B', so that the operator can conveniently engage said knob E8 witha finger-nail, in order to slide the bolt E6 forward or backward to engage or disengage the recesses ET in the binding E'. It is understood that any desired number of such bladesections B2 may be joined one on the other by providing the outer end of the blade-section B2 with a binding E and sliding bolts E, such as are found on the out-er end of the blade-section B'.
The head C is provided with two arms C' and C2, each provided with a straight front edge C2 and a parallel back edge C4. The arms C and C2 are mounted to swing on fixed pivots F', formed on a plate F, secured on the rear end of the blade-section B. In order to prevent the arms C' and C2 from becoming detached from the pivotsF', a transverse bar G is placed across the adjoining ends of the arms C' and C2, and secured by screws G' to the pivots F', as is plainly shown in Figs, l and 8. The backedges C4 of the arms C' and C2 are adapted to abut against lugs F2, formed on the plate F, and each provided with a shoulder F2, adapted to beengaged by a corresponding shoulder C5, formed on the arms C' and C2. Vhen the latterl are in an innermost position, as shown in Fig. l, the shoulders C5 and F3 abut against each other, thus preventing the respective arms C' or C2 from moving too far inward on the blade B. When the two arms C' and C2 are extended, as shown in Fig. 6, the front edges C3 of the IOO two arms are in line with each other and at right angles to the blade B. The arms C and C2 are prevented from swinging too far outwardvby the back edges C4, abutting against the lugs F2.
In order to prevent the front edges C2 from getting out of alignment when extended, I provide a screw C4 on each of the arms C and C2, said screw screwing in the back edge U4 and being adapted to abut with its head against the respective lug F2. By adjusting the screw C6 the front edges C3 of the two arms O and C2 can always be kept in alignment When extended. Near each outer end of the arms C and C2 is formed a recess OT for conveniently moving the arms C and C2 into an extended or folded position. When the two arms C and C2 are extended, both of their front edges O3 are at right angles to the blade B, and then theT-square can be used in the usual manner.
In order to draw inclined lines along the blade B, the head D is provided, which also has two pivoted arms D and D2, which,when extended, have their front edges D8 in line with each other; but said arms can be moved to any desired angle to the blade B, as illustrated in Fig. 7. Each of the arms D and D2 is provided on its inner end with a metallic plate D4, provided with a circular offset D5, (see Figs. 7 and 12,) fitting into a corresponding aperture I', formed in a plate I, mounted to turn on a screw H, which also serves to hold the plate F, previously mentioned, onto the blade B. The back edge of the metallic plate D4 is adapted to abut against ashoulder I2, formed on the plate I, so that when the arms D and D2 are extended and the side plates D4 abut against the shoulders I2, then the front edges D4 of the two arms D and D2 are in line with each other. As the arms D and D2 are held on the plate I mounted to turn, their front aligned edges D4 can be moved into any desired angle with the blade B.
From the movable plate I extends a segmental plate I2, provided with a graduation I4, indicating degrees and subdivisions of the same, and on which indicates a pointer J, secured on aplate J held in bearings F4, formed on the plate F, previously mentioned. From the under side of the plate J extends a bolt J2, which passes throughthe plate F, and on the outer end of which screws a nut K against the said plate F, so as to move the pointer J with more or less force in contact with the segmental plate I2, thereby holding the latter and its plate I in any desired position into which it may have been moved. The pointer J at the same time indicates the degree to which the front edges D3 of the arms D and D2 are set relative to the blade B.
`The metallic plate D4 on each of the arms D and D2 is so formed relatively to the apertured part of the plate I that the inwardswinging motion of the arms is limited, and the two edges D3 cannot be brought in contact with each other, as is plainly shown in Fig. 3, and their outward movement is defined, as shown in Fig. 7. A screw D4, passing through the arms D D2 and the offset D5 of vthe respective plates D4, holds the said parts in place.
Itwill be seen that the two heads C and D, arranged on opposite sides of the blade B, operate independently of each other, the head C being used for ordinary work, while the head D is used for drawing angular lines on the drawing-board. It will further be seen that when the head D is extendedand set to a desired angle the head is locked in place by screwing up the nut K, so that the pointer J locks the graduated segmental plate I3 in place, thus preventing displacement of the head when in this angular position.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a T-square, a head comprising two arms pivoted to the blade and adapted to be folded thereon or extended in line with each other and at angles to the blade, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a T-square, the combination, with a blade, of ahead comprising two arms pivoted to the said blade and adapted to be folded thereon or extended in line with each other and at angles to the said blade, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a T-square, the combination, with a blade, of a head held on the said blade and comprising two arms and a plate on which said arms are pivoted, and which itself is pivoted on the said blade, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a T-square, the combination, with a blade, of a head held on the said blade and comprising two arms, a plate on which said arms are pivoted, and which itself is pivoted on the said blade, and means, substantially as described, for locking the said plate in place, as set forth.
5. In a T-square, the combination, with a blade, of a head held on the said blade and comprising two arms, a plate on which the` said arms are pivoted, and which itself is pivoted on theV said blade, a graduated segment formed on the said plate, and a fixed pointer held on the said blade and indicating on the said graduation, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a T-square, the combination, with a blade, of a head held on the said blade and comprising two arms, a plate on which the said arms are pivoted, and which itself is pivoted on the said blade, a graduated segment formed on the said plate, a fixed pointer held on the said blade and indicating on the said IOO graduation, and a nut for locking the said pointer onto the said graduated segment,sub stantially as shown and described.l
7. In a T- square, the combination, with a blade, of a head comprising two arms pivoted to the said blade and lugs held on the said blade and adapted to be engaged by the said arms, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a T-square, the combination, with a blade, of a head comprising two arms pivoted to the said blade, and each provided with a shoulder, and lugs held on the said blade and adapted to be engaged by the said arms, and each of said lugs being provided with a shoulder to engage the shoulder of the corresponding arm,substantially as shown and described.
9. In a T-square, an extension-blade coinprising a series of blade-sections, of which one is provided with a screw engaging the other, and locking-bolts for locking the two sections in place, substantially as shown and described.
10. In a T-sqnare, the combination, with a blade-section provided with a metal binding in which is formed a nut, of a second bladesection provided in one end with a screw adapted to engage the said nut of the other blade-section, substantially as shown and described.

In a T-square, the combination, with a blade-section provided with a metal binding in which is formed a nut, of a second bladesection provided in one end with a screw adapted to engage the said nut of the other blade-section and a pin formed on the said screw and adapted to engage a corresponding recess in the other blade-section, substantially as shown and described.
12. In a T-square, the combination, with a blade-section provided with a metal binding in which is formed a nut, of a second bladesection provided in its middle at one end with a screw adapted to engage the said nut of the other blade-section, a pin formed on the said screw and adapted to engage a corresponding recess in the other blade-section, and locking-bolts held in one of the bladesections and adapted to engage the other blade-section, substantially as shown and described.
