B M HAMILTON TYPE WRITING MACHINE.
Patented June 24, 1890.
WITNESSES.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
EMER Y M. HAMILTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,775, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed February 10, 1890. Serial No. 339,770. (No model.)
citizen of the United States, have invented certain newand useful Improvementsin Type- WVrrtmg Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to what is known as the spacing-key of a type-writing machine; and it consists, primarily, in a spacing-key which is pivotally jointed or hinged at each end to its supporting-levers and my invention further consists in the devices hereinafter described, whereby the pivotal joint is constituted between the spacing-key and its supporting-levers.
Figure 1 is a plan of parts of a type-writing machine and showing a spacing-key containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the machine on the line a; on, Fig. 1, in front of the spacing-key and looking toward the rear of the machine; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine on the line y y, Fig. 2.
In the machine shown in the drawings, the type-bars, their key-levers and connections, the key-board, and the paper-carriage are not shown, as they constitute no part of my present invention. A portion of the paper-carriage-actuating mechanism is shown; but the novel features thereof do not need to be described herein, and are reserved herefrom and are fully described in and as part of the sub ject-matter of a separate application for Letters Patent filed simultaneously herewith, Serial No. 339,7 67.
In the machine shown, A is the usual lever, which is engaged by all the type-bar key-levers (not shown) to efiect the longitudinal step-by-step movement or letter-feed of the paper-carriage through the medium of the vibratory arm a of said lever, a reciprocatory bar a which said arm engages, and the springcontrolled pawls a a working to arack a on the carriage, said rack being connected to a pullingspring a by a cord a. This lever A is commonly known as the universal lever, and in the machine shown has a bar a pivotally hung to the arm a of the said lever,
as at l), and engaging the universal lever A, h
as by passing over the bar a carried by the arm a of said universal lever.
In carrying out my invention I prefer to provide the levers B B at their forward ends with the vertical extensions 1) b respectively, and these extensions may be advantageously pivotally connected to said levers, as at I prefer to employ these vertical extensions 1) b for the reason that in the organization of my type-writing machine I desire to locate my spacing-key at the rear of the key-board and immediately in front of the paper-carriage, and in such construction these extensions 1) b serve to reach from the spacing-key lovers to the spacing-key and connect the same together. Thelocation of the spacing-key may, however, be varied in the machine without departure from the essential features of my invention.
0 is the spacing-key, consisting, preferably, of a plate of Wood or metal, as shown, and of a length adapted to reach from one to the other of the levers B and B, as shown. The spacing-key 'C is pivotally jointed or hinged at or near each end to the levers B and B, and preferably to the upper ends of the vertical extensions Z) I) of said levers, as shown. I find it desirable when said vertical extensions 1) b are employed to constitute these pivotal joints or hinges by means of a socket-piece 0, adapted to fit detachably to the upper end of the vertical extension and a plate 0', which is secured to the under face of the spacing-key, as by screws 0 said plate being mortised or slotted at c to receive the solid head of the socket-piece c, and a pivot-pin 0 being passed transversely through the plate and sockethead, as shown, By means of this construction the plates 0', having the socket-pieces c pivoted to them, may be readily secured in proper positions on the key 0, and the socketpieces 0 may then be conveniently seated on the extremities of the vertical extensions 12' 12 By means of this spacing-key C, pivotally jointed at each end to the supporting-levers B B, the carriage may be moved to effect spacing on the line of printing by depressing ICO .n. A I
the key in the middle or at either end, and when the key is depressed at one end the lever at such end of the key will act to vibrate the-universal lever A, while the other lever remains idle, and the joint of the spacing-key thereto acts as a pivot on which the key oscillates. The operator may thus actuate the spacing-key with either hand, as may be most convenient at the instant when spacing is desired to be effected while printing with the machine, and may efiect the spacing with the exertion of only such force on the spacingkey as is necessary to depress but one of the spacing-key levers in engagement with the universal lever.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a type-writing machine, a spacing-key pivotally jointed at each end thereof to its supporting spacing-levers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a type-Writing machine, the combination, with the spacing-key and its supporting spacing-levers, of vertical extensions on said supporting-levers respectively, and pivotal joints uniting said spacing-key at each end thereof to said vertical extensions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a type-writing machine, the combination, with the spacing-key and its supporting spacing-levers, of vertical extensions on said supporting-levers respectively, and pivotally connected thereto, and pivotal joints uniting said spacing-key at each end thereof to said vertical extensions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a type-writing-machine, the combination, with the spacing-key and its supporting spacing-levers, of plates secured to the spacing-key at each end thereof, vertical extensions on said supporting-levers, and socketpieces fitted on the said vertical extensions, said socket-pieces being pivotally jointed to said plates respectively, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a type-writing machine, the combination, with the spacing-key and its supporting spacing-levers, of slotted plates secured to the under face of the spacing-key, vertical extensions on said supporting-levers, and socketpieces detachably fitted on said vertical extensions, with their heads located in the slots in said plates on the key, together with pivotpins passing through said plates and socketheads respectively, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7
