T. W. GARBUTT. LOGGING TRUCK.
No. 439,580. Patented Oct. 28, 1890.
wi/liheooeo amvemto'c GawZulf. Wk 24 4;.
PATENT I OFFICE.
THOMAS W. GARBUTT, OF SPANN, GEORGIA.
LOGGING-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,580, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed August 7, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. GARBUTT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Spann, in the county of Johnson and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Logging-Trucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for transporting logs and heavy timber, which are commercially known as logging carriages or trucks, the object of this invention being to so improve this class of devices as to render them more convenient in their operation and quicker to lift a log or timber and to relieve the suspension of the weight from the harness, the details of construction whereby these objects are attained being hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the device, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, showing the parts from a position at the side, the wheel on that side being removed. Fig. 3 is a plan View, and Fig. 4: is a view in perspective, showing all the parts assembled.
In the figures like referencemarks indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The axle A may be of any construction desired, being preferably of metal to bear the heavy strains, and has secured to it a short tongue at, which has means at its ends for the attachment of a suitable single or double tree. The piece a is secured on top of the axle A, and on top of this part a is a piece (1 preferably of metal. To the piece a is secured the braces a which assist the fastenings which hold the parts a and a in posit-ion on the axle and also forms a brace against side motion of the tongue a, being secured together at the apex of the brace and near the front end of the tongue. The axle and the superincumbent parts a and a have at their middle a forward bend, as best Serial No. 361,871. (No model.)
shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, which allows the chain to descend through the center of each wheel, thus insuring a stationary position of the tongue relative to the log when said log is suspended from the axle. The chain 12, carrying the dogs B on its end, passes upwardly over the part a and is secured to the tongue 0, at the point where it is secured to the axle A.
The operation of this device is as follows: The truck is so placed that the center of the axle longitudinally is over a portion of the log which it is desired to attach to, and the horses are backed up and the tongue a turned to nearly a vertical position, which will lower the dogs, and said dogs will then be set into the sides of the log and the horses started up, which will partially revolve the body of the truck on the axle-bearings in the wheel as a pivot, and so swing the elevation formed by the parts a and a from a horizontal to a vertical position, and so lift the log, the chain passing into the concavity in the axle, which throws the center of gravity on a line intersecting a line drawn through the center of the axle bearings, and so prevents the weight of the log from revolving the axle or strain ing contiguous parts; also, by means of this construction the long tongue is dispensed with, which is otherwise necessary and which makes it almost impossible to turn in a comparatively thick growth of timber, the short tongue allowing this turning without lifting the truck.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the described class, the axle, the pieces a and a secured to the said axle, the said axle and pieces being curved forward at their central parts, the tongue at, the braces a the chain b, attached to the central part of the axle and its superincumbent parts and hanging from the rear of the same, and the dogs attached to the free end 5 2 eaaaso being concaved at said central portion, as In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my specified, the short tongue secured thereto, signature in presence of two witnesses.
and the chain secured to said tongue and passing over the elevated portion and de- 5 pending in the bottom of said concavity and carrying suitable dogs for grasping the log,
substantially as specified.
THOMAS \V. GARBUTT.
