BARREL-CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,030, dated October '7, 1890.
Application filed August 1, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY O. STROUT, of Peabody, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Closures, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to barrel-closures for use more especially upon barrels to be used in the transportation of odoriferous substancessuch, for instance, as house-garbage-and is an improvement upon the invention described in another application of mine filed May 15, 1890, Serial No. 351,863; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings, and to the claims hereinafter given, and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan of a barrel with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of a portion of that end of the barrel to which is applied the removable head. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a portion of the barrel and its removable head, and illustrates the manner of connecting the clamping-levers to the body of the barrel; and Fig. 4: is a similar view illustrating a modified form of the connection between the clampinglever and the body of the barrel.
In my invent-ion illustrated and described in the above cited prior application I used three radially-arranged clamping-levers, all operated upon by a central cam, said levers being pivoted to ears secured to the body of the barrel. This arrangement I have found to be somewhat objectionable on account of the levers being in the way and troublesome when the head is removed. To obviate this objection and improve the device generally, I construct the barrel-closure as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which A is the main body of the barrel.
B is the removable head, made preferably of cast metal and provided on its under side with the annular inclined rib a and upon its upper side with upwardly-proj ecting ears I) b, to which the levers C are pivoted, as shown.
The head B,instead of being made circular and of the same diameter as the chine of the barrel, is so shaped that at the points where Serial No. 360,673. (No model.)
the ears I) b are located it projects beyond the outer surface of the chine as far as the outer ends of the levers 0 project, and has cast thereon short segmental ribs 0 on each side of each lever O, which ribs serve to protect the ends of said levers from being accidentally injured by receiving a blow thereon, the upper POI? tion of said ribs extending across and bridging the space between the two ears I) of each pair. Between the ears I) of each pair the head B is cut away to a point just within the diameter of the chine to permit the link (1 to lie in close contact with the chine, as shown in Fig. 1.
The head B has formed upon its under side the pendent hub B, in which is formed the threaded hole 6, extending from the upper surface of the head to near the lower end of said hub, and has fitted thereto the threaded bolt f, provided with a suitable head by which said bolt may be rotated to screw said bolt into or out of said threaded hole. lhe bolt f has mounted thereon just under its head the collar g, provided with short socketed arms g, corresponding in number to the number of levers (-J employed, said collar being held in its position in contact with the head of said bolt by the pin h, inserted through said bolt at the proper distance from its head, as shown.
The inner end of each lever O is inserted in one of the sockets g, and its outer end is connected to one end of a link (Z, the other end of which is connected to a suitable ear firmly secured to the exterior of the barrel, as shown. The link (1 maybe a plain chain link, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or it may be made in two parts d and (1 connected together by an adjusting-screw (1 as a means of varying the length of said link, said screw being provided with right and left hand screw-threads, as shown. The link cl may be permanently attached to the ear h, secured to the body of the barrel, and engage at its upper end with a slight depression in the upper edge of the short arm of the lever O, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or it may be pivoted to the short arm of said lever and engage at its lower end with a lug 7; on the plate 1'', secured to the body of the barrel, as shown in Fig. 4:.
D is a rubber gasket, made in the form of an endless band, having when in its normal condition a circular cross-section, and surrounds the inclined annular rib a, so as tobe removable therewith, and when the head is placed in position on the barrel said gasket bears upon the inclined surface of the chine of the barrel, as shown in Fig. 2.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the barrel has been filled, the head Bis placedin position on the barrel,and connection is made between the links 01 and the levers 0, when the bolt f is screwed into the hub B until the inner ends of the levers O are de-,
pressed sufficiently far to so compress the gasket as to make the joint between the end of the barrel and the head B liquid-tight.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In combination with the body of the barrel A, having secured thereto a plurality of ears or lugs, as shown, the removable head 13, provided with the hub B, the ears I) b, and ribs c, said head having a slot formed in its edge between the ears I) of each pair, aplura-lity of levers pivoted to the cars 17 h, links d, connecting, each of the ears or lugs secured to the body of the barrel to the outer end of one of said levers and occupying a position between the ears b b and the ribs 0 a, so as to be protected thereby, the screw-bolt f, movable vertically in the hub B, the collar 9, provided with sockets g to receive the inner ends of the levers O and mounted upon and movable vertically with said bolt f, and the rubber gasket D, all constructed, arranged,
and operating substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of the body of the barrel A, a plurality of ears or lugs secured to the exterior of said barrel, the removable head 13, a rubber gasket inserted between said head and the end of the body A, a plurality of levers pivoted to said head, a screw-bolt fitted to and movable vertically in a nut formed in the center of said head, a collar mounted upon and movable vertically with said bolt July, A. D. 1890.
