0. L. BANDY & G.. B. COLE. TOY.
No. 437,082. Patented Sept. 23, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER L. BANDY AND GEORGE B. COLE, OF LA SALLE, ILLINOIS.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,082, dated September 23,1890.
Application filed June 7, 1890- Serial No. 354,612. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, OLIVER L. BANDY and GEORGE B. COLE, citizens of the United States, and residents of La Sal1e,in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys;
and We do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side View partly broken away.
This invention relates to certain lmprovements in toys of the acrobatic class; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will hereinafter appear.
In the drawings, A designates the puppetor acrobat, through the body portion of which and forming the arms thereof is passed the loop or bail a of a crank-shaft A, journaled or pivoted upon uprights or standards 17, secured to a suitable base B, the pivotal connection of said shaft with said standards being eifected, preferably, by means of staples or eyes I) driven into the upper ends of the lat-.
- ter and having said shaft passing through said eyes or staples.
The shaft A has preferably two crank-arms or handles a for its convenient manipulation from either end, and bridging or spanning the open end of the loop or bail a of said shaft is a light wire 0, twisted upon itself and connected to and forming a virtual continuation of said shaft, thus constituting the performing-bar. The puppet or acrobat has pivoted legs A each provided in its rear surface with an inwardly and upwardly extending notch d, and has feet A provided with upwardly and forwardly extended portions e and heel-extensions f,all adapted for engagement with the performing-bar as next described.
It will be observed that when the crankshaft A is turned, say, to the right a complete revolution the acrobat or puppet will perform orturn aback han dsprin g, suspending itself by the hands and the heel-extensions upon the bar 0, with the body horizontal and the face downward. By reversing the movement of the crank-shaft A just the opposite of the above action will take place, the puppet or acrobat turninga front hand-spring, facing upward and similarly suspending itself, in this instance the extending of the feet A engaging the bar 0. Again, by turning the shaft A to the right and a little more than a half-revolution and holding it the puppet or acrobat will be perchedor caused to assume a sitting posture upon the performing-bar c, the engagement of the notches d d with said bar securing this result. Thus the toy is rendered amusing and interesting, performing its antics with precision and facility.
Having described this invention, What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The combination, with the crank-shaft and the performing-bar, of the puppetor acrobat suspended from said shaft, having its legs provided in their rear portions with inwardly and upwardly extending notches adapted to engage said bar, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the crank-shaft and the performing-bar, of the puppet or acrobat suspended from said shaft and having the heel-extensions engaging said bar, substantially as set forth. a
3. The toy consisting of the crank-shaft suitably supported in an elevated position and the performing-bar forming a virtual continuation thereof, and the puppet or acrobat suspended from the loop orbail of said shaft and having its legs provided with inwardly and upwardly extended rear notches, the heel-extensions, and forwardly and upwardly extended feet-extensions, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
